This site uses HTTP, as in it's not encrypted, and that's pretty normal for message boards and the like, or has been for years. Yes, it's true that there isn't any privacy in it really, as it wasn't designed with privacy in mind; what you type, passwords included, to exactly  which pages, are sent over the wires in a readable way. HTTPS (green padlock in address bar), which uses encryption to make all that plain text just ~random gobbledegook while travelling through the wires, has always tended to be used for more critical information like your banking etc. If sniffed - listen into along the way - only the main address is to be seen, not the exact page, or what you're typing on it.

The browser makers, and others, are pushing for it to be used across the board, hence these warnings.

So, common sense it is - think of HTTP, the lack of a green padlock, as a crowded room where everything you say could potentially be heard by others, if someone capable chose to eavesdrop, and share info accordingly. 

Also important to note is the fact that the Government gets everything.

When my laptop became Windows I couldn't put emojis on here yet I could on two other forums, recently I was able to put them on here

I'm afraid I can't help with your computer directly, I'd just be guessing, but here's a link to a site that scans for dodgyness in websites and what it says about this one.

Also, it uses a service called CloudFlare, which acts as a kind of defence against various attacks to websites. That can make a site seem to hang when you log on as it does it's thing.

So, yeah, the site might be a bit flakey but it seems 'safe' enough. The adverts are probably the biggest risk. Internet adverts are a world of pain when it comes to security.

4 years later,the only site I get screen lock,even though it has had [update?].

This site doesn't run the latest version of the software but it seems fairly safe.  As somebody else said adverts can add some risks but forum's by the very nature of not running flashy stuff can often be some of the safest.
