General Election: Homeless people get a chance to vote

Homeless people are being helped to register to vote in the forthcoming general election thanks to a pioneering scheme.

Normally, people must state a home address when applying to join the electoral register - an obvious problem for the homeless.

But charity worker Alec McFadden is allowing people in Salford and Manchester to use his office address as their own.

Mr McFadden, who is manager of the Salford Unemployed and Community Resource Centre, said he was prompted after seeing the large number of homeless people around the two cities.

According to the Electoral Commission, homeless people can register to vote if they are able to state an address where they spend a substantial amount of their time.
