Snow has fallen across many parts of the UK overnight, with forecasters warning that road, rail and air travel may be disrupted.

The Met Office said "increasingly frequent" snow showers were affecting parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.

It said 10-20cm of snow could fall in northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, the West Midlands and north Wales.

The Met Office has yellow "be aware" warnings in place for snow and ice.

It said across the UK, 2-5cm (1-2in) of snow was likely in the other affected areas.

"The heaviest and most frequent snow showers will progressively become confined to north-east Scotland during Saturday," it said.

Today

An icy start, with snow in places. Most of the region will be sunny and dry through the rest of day. Showers continuing around coastal areas, mainly falling as rain or sleet, but the odd flurry of snow in places.

Tonight

A few showers will continue this evening, otherwise clear and frosty for a time. Southern areas will turn cloudy with sleet and snow arriving, which could be heavy by morning.

I think I may have been to the Trafford Centre about four times, and thats quite enough for me. I believe it can be horrendous getting in and out by car, especially at this time of the year.

That's why he didn't stop after he'd dropped me off ;)

I only went to four shops and then came home.

More snow is hitting the UK with an amber weather warning issued across large parts of the country.

Up to 28cm of snow has been recorded by the Met Office across high ground in Wales, one of the worst affected regions.

Warnings have also been extended for snow and high winds of 80 mph are a possibility in the south of England.

Flights, trains and road travel are expected to be disrupted for most of the day, with some runways blocked.

The media go totally over the top at any snowfall, everything grinds to a crawl, schools shut down, jeez I'd hate to think how we'd cope if we got a real winter, how did we manage in the past when we had real snow ?  ::)

I used to work alongside a woman from Poland who was genuinely astounded one winter when the nation ground to a standstill over snow that was a nearly FOUR INCHES HIGH in places!!!!

She told us that every year without fail she and her friends would walk to school with at least six feet of snowfall either side of them. Anything less that that was considered to be a mild winter. The entire country was exactly the same and, needless to say, life carried on exactly as normal.
