Daimler House & Manchester Garages
« on: 16:20:24, 17/01/18 »
Does anyone have any memories to share on these two motor dealerships. I worked at Daimler House who were Jaguar Triumph dealers around 1968/9. They were opposite Whitworth park. I think its now a shop but its kept the same frontage..
I also worked at Manchester garages as a salesman in the mid 70's. It was a Ford dealership with a big presence with Cortina/Escort and Fiesta being the cars to have!Easier to but a Curry now down there than a car!
Happy days...

Hi Paul.

I worked at Manchester garages for about 15yrs !!

Started as a salesman with Ken Long, Louis Marland, etc. Danny Bailey was the sales manager, and snooty "Miss Lister" was Bob stoodly's assistant.

I ended up Sales manager, as Louis left to start his own business , Danny also left , and John Yarwood took over from Collin LLoyd as Dealer Principal .

Lots of memories, including Albert Morgan, the mechanic, driving the vintage fire engine round the Belle Vue speedway track.

Who can forget the formidable Edna Clifford in accounts !!

Let me know if we were there at the same time

Regards
Gordon

Hi Gordon
My full name is Paul Tavernor I worked in Carefree Car Hire for a couple of years. John Dale was the GM in there and Wilf Goldstone was salesman. Janet Oldfield was the sales admin lady and she was ‘friendly’ with a guy called Bruce who was a service receptionist I think. I remember your name but I can’t place you!
Remember well Mr Stoodley and Miss Lister! Colin Lloyd and Danny.
Memories are fading! I’m still working in the trade what about you??
Regards
Paul.

Hi Paul

I started at Carefree car hire ( was poached from Tom Garner Motors ) I think the manager was Robert something then? John Dale and myself were sales, and Wilf was the fleet salesman I think?  Other names spring to mind,...Brian Brown, Paul Phillips, Peter Rodda, Dean Shaw, Joe Sergeant, and Rod Howarth in sales ,... Big old Lurlene in the office, Rodney Brown in the bodyshop, and good old Albert Morgan from the "Flow Line" who went on to be well in at Manchester United, and was often seen sitting by Alex Ferguson at matches !
I Came to the states 22 yrs ago, and was the GM at a LandRover/Jaguar dealership, and the last 7 yrs as GM at a new Mini dealership. I finally retired last year .

Its certainly a nice change to be home in the evenings and at weekends !!!  Don't miss it one bit

What are you up to ?

Cheers
Gordon

looking back it was great fun. Boy some of those guys were characters! Wouldn't go down so well in todays world! Working as an MD at a dealership in North Wales probably retire soon. Not much joy in the job any more or maybe I'm just getting old!

My dad used to work in Daimler House , . He was on the sales staff and I used to go with him on a Saturday morning to work Quite a few times I went with him when he was delivering bare chassis to Duple coachworks in Blackpool, and once I went with him when he delivered Lady Dockers Daimler to Blackpool. I used to go into the building when I worked on Wilmslow Road but by then It was Drabble and Allen. Used to fit the alarms and phones to the new jags

Bought my first car from Manchester Garages back in 1963

A Ford Anglia.  The official colour was lime green (did I really buy a car that colour??  I was rather younger then ) but my wife always insists it was yellow

Hi Russell, my father Fred Coleman not sure if you remember him, worked there in the 60's and 70's driving cars in and out for work to be done on them , he came over here to Perth in oz after retiring, in the late 70's but sadly died a couple of years later. Also Dave Evans, big with ginger hair, played center half for Kelmscott here in wa, and he was tough and a good player. he was a mechanic also I believe.. He knew my dad, from his time at Manchester garages.. He was playing there in late 70's and on, then eventually moved over to the north side of Perth, and we lost touch. Both my brother and myself played there for a few years also. Trevor Brooking came over in the 80's and played some games for Kelmscott,  guest player, Kelmscott were hammers fans to start with and played in West Hams colours. Trevor was a great ambassador for football and still is. cheers rob.

Hi Rob i can see your Dad now.Black wavey hair smoking white coat swinging a big bunch of keys round his
finger.he had to open up and lock up every day.I remember after a game at Main Rd there was lots of damage down Oxford Rd the next time there was another home game he came back early that was on a Saturday afternoon  he locked up early, told me to go home to prevent any football hooligans come inside the Garages .I did not take Dave Evans as a footy player.Another ex garages employee comes over to Perth occasionally do not  know which part. His name is Peter Lenton his wife has relatives there somewhere.he knew your dad and Dave.I hope some more people join this web sight its interesting to catch up and get to know how they are doing where they are living etc.Cheers for now Russell

Hi Russell, good to catch up. You certainly described my dad to perfection Ha. Wavey hair, smoking etc, which was what got him in the end, sadly. He liked it here in Perth He loved the sunshine, and used to come to all our training sessions and games, then back to clubhouse for a drink. Funny but growing up ,playing every week for the school, and after in different leagues around manchester and stockport., never came to one game. Different times, I suppose. I used to sit in a little hut on weekends with him sometimes, when he caretaked the large parking area full of cars on hathersage rd. Like a night watchman.Did work a lot of hours, probably why he never got to a game.Peter Lenton name sounds familiar, he also used to mention ,I think a Barry ??? who had been to Sth. australia, and returned to Manchester, My dad used to try and put me off emigrating ,saying Barry had to catch  a bus and train to get to work. I got to Perth and also at first going back into baking, travelled to Perth on a train then bus, but wasn't too bad at all, about an hour or so, but you get used to it. Seeing the different people on this site is good, all a connection in a small way, able to catch up. Julies message also with Derek , you may have known him as well. Cheers for now Rob :)

Hello Julie I knew dad quite well .he was man before his time.he was an auto electrician one of the few people allowed to work on the bosses two tone zodiac. Can you recall him buying a biege Ford Anglia this was wiyh a 997cc engine but before it ever got number plates he disassembled the engine and changed it into a 1200cc
engine .He had the rear indicators set up as reversing lights .then I think he had a few more gadgets
inside.when automatics transmissions were becoming more popular the boss sent he on a course so he was the first person at the Garages capable of repairing them.Is he still with you,He was without a doubt one of the smartest person there .I hope this gives you some insights to what he was like.Take care Russell :)
