Does anyone know where the Newtown area in Manchester is?  I used to know at one time, but my minds gone blank!

Greater Manchester has a place called Newtown not far from Wigan, I couldn't find anything nearer but maybe someone else can O0

Hi Jim,
Newtown was a small area fronting Portland Street, (Now called Dantzic Street) most of my Paternal ancestors lived there.
Look for the Travis isle Mill on an old map -- Newtown is a few hundred yards South.
 Regards, Oldron.

Not sure what this map date is, it's a large A0 size I got reprinted from a university about a year ago.
I would guess about mid 1800s. It shows all the streets around Manchester central and up to Cheetham.
Looking on Google street view now, the Newtown area is being redeveloped for residential high-end apartments.
It looks like the area will be called "Angelgate"

Oldron.

Yeah I believe your're right Ron, I've just realised there used to be a  small railway sidings about quarter of a mile out of Victoria station, on the left going up to Miles Platting. The area is in Collyhurst, but there must have been a reason for it being called' Newtown' sidings. And it's less than 10 mins walk from Danzic st. Thanks.
