England performed well, and there is reason to be cautiously optimistic about the future. However, we must keep it all in perspective. The team played seven matches in this World Cup, winning four of them but losing the other three. We beat our weaker opponents (Paraguay, Tunisia, Columbia and Sweden) but were found wanting whenever we came up against anybody who was any good (Belgium twice and Croatia).

Not too bad, then, but plenty more work still to do.

2018 World Cup, a summary:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44849930

Four simple words, used variously as a statement or a question across the country during a baking June and scorching July: "Best World Cup ever?"

The 2018 edition of international football's ultimate gathering was not the most-anticipated tournament in the game's long history, for a variety of reasons, but perhaps that was a good thing.

Because from the moment hosts Russia smashed five goals past Saudi Arabia in the opening game, there was barely any let-up in drama and excitement. The group stage, the knockout stage, even the final - so often a cagey procession to extra time in recent World Cups - delivered what they needed to.

In a football world of plenty, the relative infrequency of World Cups - held only every four years - means the tournament retains a fascination and cultural heft that easily outweighs the now technically superior club game.

All very true, Celeste, but don't worry because FIFA are already right on the ball when it comes to destroying the greatest sporting contest on earth. Their masterplan to expand it to 48 teams from 2026 will certainly ensure that goose won't be laying any more golden eggs. The poor old goose will be served up on a plate, in fact, and the World Cup will begin its entirely avoidable and completely unnecessary slide into second class status, just like the FA Cup. If FIFA are lucky the decline might even be kickstarted in 2022, when the contest will be staged on a patch of sand in the back end of absolutely nowhere.

We're very lucky that the world's biggest sport is in the hands of such capable and definitely-not-corrupt intellectual giants, aren't we?
