In the M.E.N. the other night there was an article about Kendals closing and it did say that Rackhams was shutting in January, however I have just read conflicting stories online saying it is staying open, sorry Celeste  :-[

I always thought that if big stores had a restaurant or café they would bring in more custom until John Lewis closed their ground floor café at the Trafford Centre

The high street is struggling because of sky high parking charges for shoppers and rents and business rates for the retailers that are so sordid they can only be described as usury. This has been going on for donkeys years and the situation has only changed to get even worse.

It's almost as if local authorities actually welcome business failure, isn't it?

I wonder why?

Such a shame that after surviving the Manchester bombings, and having to be virtually re-built, this landmark store has finally given in.

Its the same here in the US,  Walmart  closing stores, Sears going bankrupt , Dillards & J.C Penny's on the brink .

Welcome Amazon ! the new face of shopping I guess  :(

Quote Steve: I wonder why?

Do you mean, and it's only a guess, that the councils want the land for buildings because of the booming population and are quite content to see us all shopping online?

I think you are on to something there Celeste, I was wondering the same thing, is it a way of creating a city centre for the well heeled with upmarket shops and apartments with bars and coffee shops everywhere?  :-\
