Almark and Peterloo Massacre August 16 1819
« on: 11:09:14, 16/03/20 »
My ancestor Thomas Almark (Allmark) lived next to St Peter's Fields on Peter Street, Alport Town, Manchester (The Midland, Free Trade Hall etc).

Peter Street was the end of Alport Lane and the beginning of Deans Gate (Deansgate)

On August 16, 1819, about 60,000 people attended, they had travelled by foot and cart from in and around Manchester and Salford for a peaceful meeting, to listen to talks on the freedom of speech

Thomas Almark was arrested and imprisoned for attending. Many were killed or maimed by cavalry sabres.

Alport Town was demolished for Central Station, Cheshire Lines Railway Goods Station and finally G.N.R. Goods Station.

On August 16, 2019, a monument was opened to commemorate this important world event.
