Researching death of PC Chapman in 1918
« on: 16:18:01, 18/07/20 »

Hi, I live in Sheffield but i'm researching my great great uncle, hoping to find anymore information on him please...

My great great uncle was a police officer in Salford Greater Manchester who died on duty on 1st January 1918 whilst on patrol in Bury New Road, Higher Broughton

He lived in Park Street, Higher Broughton which still appears on Google maps today.
He previously fell down on Tenariffe St, injuring his face, and was later found dead on Bury New Road.

Do these actual streets still exist? Would anyone have any photos of these streets in 1918? And would anyone have the 1918 census to see which house number he lived at please as I would like to visit the scenes one day.

PC Robert Walter Croston Chapman

Hi, I have found Robert in the 1911 Census (there was No Census done in 1918) but he was then living in Overbrook Cavendish Road, Broughton, Salford.

He is shown with his wife, Rebecca and their three children.

The next Census is due out, the 1921, in 2021.

I will check the 1939 Register to see if Park Street is listed.

Robert could have moved to Park Street any time from 1911 until his unfortunate death.

Many thanks Alan, much appreciated.
Does it show a house number for Cavendish Road please?

No, just the name of the Road.

There may be a delay in my replies as I now live in Western Australia, although born and bred in Manchester

Hi LeadFarmer

Apologies for the delay.

I couldn't locate Rebecca Chaman in Park Street, Salford, in the 1939 Register.

I did however find a death for a Rebecca Chapman in 1928. I don't know if this is the same person, but it could, perhaps, explain why she is not on the Register.

The death was recorded in the Manchester South District which is not all that far from the Salford District.

I saw in the 1911 Census that Rebecca was born in Dublin and the Manchester South area had a high number of Irish families in the area.

The only way to find out if it is the same person would be to send off for the Death Certificate.

There is a Board on this Site called Manchester Genealogy. Perhaps if you posted a similar request on there, someone might be able to help you further.

Cheers

Sorry, I also should have said that the 1921 Census may show where Rebecca was living.

LeadFarmer,

I've just found out that the 1921 Census will not be released until January 2022.

LeadFarmer,

I've just found out that the 1921 Census will not be released until January 2022.

Interesting, I wonder if thats due to staff shortages etc?

I have contacted Greater Manchester Police museum and asked them for any information they may have. They have sent me some of his service record which is quite fascinating..

Sad that when he died in 1918 he left behind his three children aged just 7, 10 & 12.

Would be nice to be able to get his death certificate too.
