ST JAMES, BIRCH,RUSHOLME
« on: 11:18:56, 14/01/08 »
My great grandparents were buried at St James.

The church closed for worship in 1979 and is now used for offices.

In old photos graves and headstones can be seen but now they are no

longer there. Would they have just been taken down or would the graves

have been dug and the deceased buried elsewhere ?

Hi Migky, thanks for the reply. The St James in question is at the top end of Brighton Grove,  near  Birchfields Park and Manchester Grammer school.

I would think it might be worth contacting Manchester library and asking there for more infomation. or you could contact Blackley crematorium as they seem to hold all C-of-E grave record. If it was a R.C. i would try contacting the Salford diocese as i think all R.C. churches  came under them? then if that fails, you could try Lancashire county records Preston, i know they hold all sorts of records like that.

8 years on . apparently the grave stones were just stacked in a pile on the grounds though i understand some have been moved back.  search rusholme archive for a history of the Birch family.
