I remember going there but can't remember which stalls, most probably the clothing stalls.  I think I was a bit apprehensive about going down there in case there was a bomb scare.

I used to go there :)

I used to go to the Top Rock Shop on the left hand side at the top of the stairs, and my first leather jacket was from the leather shop there.

Pics of the 'Market Centre'

Use the search button for more.

Great resource from the council here, relive your memories as most streets/roads/districts have pics.

I used to use the UM back in '69 - 75. Usually the upstair 'boutiques' - Stole from Ivor' etc. (Sad.) g

Wow I do remember this place and I loved it! I work in Manchester and often wonder which shop this is now under. Middle of Market St but cant see the join. Please do not tell me Tesco is on top of it! I remember Tesco when it was crap and a sub standard cheapo gaff. Nothing has changed but the higher pricing, bullying their suppliers, crap tomatos for life and corporate marketing. Oh ek I have gone off on one.

I do believe the underground market was on Market Street / Brown Street. The public entrances were blocked off and the inner market area underneath was used for the new developments.

My Mum informed me it was a place to by 'tacky' flares from in the early seventies  :)

Can remember going once or twice, don't recall if I ever bought anything but would like to know what the underground developments are now :)

Sorry folks, I tried to post it in its largest size... and it obviously won't let me.

Go here:   http://www.images.manchester.gov.uk/

And on  'Search Images'... go to 'Find' and tap in: Market Centre.

Then pick the ones you want from the list.

I also typed in Lancaster Avenue, since demolished - have been trying to find a picture of that for ages ;)

It had to be Ben Sherman or a Jaytex... anything else just didn't do it.

What about Hurley's Sports, in Piccadilly for Slazenger v-necks and Fred Perry t-shirts.

Timpsons for 'Royals' - a heavy brogue that cost all of £7.50, or Dolcis for a pair of slip-on Weegian(sp) loafers.

I think that in '71, I had probably just moved into penny-round collars, tank tops and longer hair - what an ar*e I must have looked. ;D
