Ewing School, West Didsbury
« on: 02:32:33, 18/12/08 »
Parents with children at Ewing School have been up in arms since they learnt about the council's controversial proposals to get more pupils with disabilities and learning difficulties into mainstream schools. The Ewing School which was named after a leading researcher in language disorders, Sir Alexander Ewing (1892-1980), opened in 1968 to cater for children suffering from speech and language disorders.

Only just joined the Forum tonight and noticed the your comment re proposed closure of Ewing school.
Yes you're quite right, the parents are up in arms about the closure.
This is the only speech, language and communication school in Manchester that caters for the higher functioning autistic children.
61% of these children have already been excluded/removed from mainstream schools because it does not work for them, for all kinds of reasons including the enviourment is wrong.
I am a member of the PACE (Parents Against the Closure of Ewing) group and my son goes to this school.
He has been in mainstream and a moderate learning school (Which along with other MLD schools in Manchester got closed down).
We have an on line petition against the closure which we would appreciate for anyone to sign. www.petition.co.uk then save Ewing.
We would also like anyone to contact us if they are prepared to join our fight by attending protest.
We are also asking for any professionals either in education or medical to provide written statements to say why forcing our children back to mainstream is wrong, and why Small classes in specialised schools is needed.
Any ideas/advice is greatly received.
Please note the author of the petition is no longer part of PACE, instead please contact Rita on [email protected] or 07919522717

Hello, I'm a journalist at Manchester Evening News. I was wondering what the latest was on this protest against the closure of Ewing School and who is highly involved with the campaign against it? Also, are any of you parents of children at the school?

If you could either PM me some info or reply on here I'd greatly appreciate.

Thanks,
Helen

Hi helen   I have only just seen your post.   No parents are in school but there is a parents group running the campaign and organising the protest.
We went into formal consultation on April 1st  although reading this weeks south manchester reporter it looks like a decision has already been made.
If you are interested in contacting us to see how things are going please do so.
The Chair of the group is Rita Williams [email protected]
We look forwardto hearing from you.

Hi Debs,

I've posted the following on MySpace ....

Save Ewing School

A Protest is being held in Albert Square, Manchester between the hours of 11.30AM and 1.30PM on the 23rd April 2009, to fight the proposed closure of our special needs school.

If you are able to join this Protest please contact in advance so that the organizers can inform the police of the numbers expected to attendthis event.. Ewing School is the Speech, Language and Communication school in Manchester.

I added the link to this thread but will be posting another message.

Who do people need to contact if they wish to attend this event?

Christopher

Can you tell us how everything went?  I couldn't go in the end as I'd made an appointment with someone to come and give a quote for a conservatory  (I'd put him off once)
