Manchester Grammar School  was started by Hugh Oldham in 1515 who paid £5. for a piece of land on which to build a school. When the School opened its doors at Long Millgate in August 1518, the total cost of building had amounted to £216 13s and 5d. You can read the full history of the school on its website by clicking on the school's name at the start of this message.

Pre 1976, when the Education Secretary,  Shirley_WilliamsShirley Williams (Baroness Williams of Crosby),  removed funding from direct-grant grammar schools, Manchester Grammar School was non fee paying but it is now an  Independent School.  The School has two sister schools, Withington Girls' School and Manchester High School for Girls.
