I lived in Derby Street, Cheetham Hill up to the age of nearly 7, when we moved to a new council house in Stockport.  My memories of living there are crystal clear, as much as a 6 year old would remember.  Recently I did a sentimental journey round Cheetham Hill and felt sad at the state that Derby Street's in.  The Manchester Ice Palace where my dad once took me, all neglected and run down.  We lived on the other side of Cheetham Hill Road and I have photos of me and my sisters all dressed up in our Whit Walks gear, and a nice one of a group of blokes taken outside the Queen's Arms Pub on Honey Street, which is still there and looks almost the same, except the windows have changed.  Also the men in the photo are almost all wearing shirts and ties.  This was taken sometime in the forties I think.  I used to walk to school, crossing Cheetham Hill Road (though it wouldn't have been busy with traffic like it is now) and down Derby Street, past a milk bottling factory.  I can recall the sound of the machinery and the bottles clanking.  Right down Derby Street to my school which was called Waterloo Road School I think.  I can hardly believe my mum let me walk that journey on my own, but I suppose it was different in the fifties and early sixties when I lived there.  My memories of living there are only happy ones.  I've read a few of the posts about Cheetham Hill but none of the ones I've read are from anyone living in that particular area.

There's a Facebook page entitled 'did you live in Cheetham or Cheetham Hill' with lots of interesting photos and comment.  Some of the folks there are discussing getting together to protest at the terrible neglected state of Cheetham (Crumpsall?) Library in the village.  It is grade II listed but the four individuals who have bought it seem to be neglecting it to the point that it will fall down, and it has some wonderful features, stain glass windows, art nouveau tiles etc.  I know that, if my house was Grade II listed and I let it get in that state, the authorities would take action.  However Manchester authorities are turning a blind eye to the disintegration of Cheetham.  It is hoped to get up a petition and involve the Manchester Evening News.

Hi Lenhester, i lived about 100 yds from Honey st.  The dairy was the Lancashire Hygenic, i can still smell the milk and you could buy ice, i think they made their own. All the dairy'shad their own named bottles, keeping all others, which had got mixed in, in storage. My dad would take me along in his wagon to the other dairy's to return them to Derby st

Re your comment on Cheetham library I would be glad to add my name to this petition.  This was the first library I ever used back in 1940s and it was a very impressive building.
I remember the wide stone staircase and the big wooden and leaded glass internal doors.  There was I think a parquet block floor.  There was a separate room where newspapers were spread along a long sloping wooden frame of a type which many libraries used to have, but which probably don't exist any longer. Each paper was  held in place by a brass pole down the centre.
Its a shame to see buildings like that fall into disrepair, but presumably it outlived its day as a library and the council couldnt find an alternative use.  The kind of cohesive local community that it served has changed completely.

That's great Lozflam, thanks for that.  I would post my photos of Derby Street and the Queen's Arms with all the blokes outside but sadly, I'm very computer illiterate.  By the way, for anyone who might read the posts and know, Leonard Hester (one of the men in the photo outside the pub) was married to my grandmother, Lilian Holland.

Yes I agree. How thoughtful of you after all this time to come on here to register your displeasure. ;)

:)    Is there anyone who remembers the 1950s Hightown area?  I am looking for 2 streets which are not on the 1931 map.

    1) Bellingham Street ( supposed to have been near the washouse)
    2) Citron Street ( Off Waterloo Road)

Hi Streetseeker.  I know it's not Cheetham Hill and I don't know exactly when it was changed, ( before the 1950's probably) but Sanitary Street in Ancoats was changed to Anita Street, where my great-grandmother lived in the 50's/60's whilst her flat in Victoria Buildings was being refurbished.
