I lived in Derby Street, Cheetham Hill up to the age of nearly 7, when we moved to a new council house in Stockport. My memories of living there are crystal clear, as much as a 6 year old would remember. Recently I did a sentimental journey round Cheetham Hill and felt sad at the state that Derby Street's in. The Manchester Ice Palace where my dad once took me, all neglected and run down. We lived on the other side of Cheetham Hill Road and I have photos of me and my sisters all dressed up in our Whit Walks gear, and a nice one of a group of blokes taken outside the Queen's Arms Pub on Honey Street, which is still there and looks almost the same, except the windows have changed. Also the men in the photo are almost all wearing shirts and ties. This was taken sometime in the forties I think. I used to walk to school, crossing Cheetham Hill Road (though it wouldn't have been busy with traffic like it is now) and down Derby Street, past a milk bottling factory. I can recall the sound of the machinery and the bottles clanking. Right down Derby Street to my school which was called Waterloo Road School I think. I can hardly believe my mum let me walk that journey on my own, but I suppose it was different in the fifties and early sixties when I lived there. My memories of living there are only happy ones. I've read a few of the posts about Cheetham Hill but none of the ones I've read are from anyone living in that particular area.
