Hi Reuben,
The 81 ran from Crumpsall down Waterloo Road - I used to catch it from the top of Garnett Street. However, I can't remember if it turned down Elizabeth Street and onto Cheetrham Hill Rd. or carried on down to Strangeways and so on to Town. Mike Harding (a folk singer/comedian popular in the 70's/80's) wrote a song 'The Number 81 bus' about a ghost bus travelling to Crumpsall!

although I can't find a recording on youTube.
Enjoy the Allsorts!

I have not been on the forum for a couple of years and enjoyed reading all the posts and pictures. Lots of us Cheetham Hill people spread around the world.  Does anybody remember the name of the record shop down near Victoria station approach? My sister who went to school at Notre Dame use to buy her beatles Lp's there?

Tony...how amazing you are!!  THAT IS IT....we use to walk down from Home (elsworth Street near st, chads) and go to that record store. I do have a picture that I shared on this blog of my home and Lord Street/Elsworth Street.
Superb... Thanks so much

Hey

I am currently writing a dissertation on Cheetham Hill Road as it is currently . I am doing a brief section on the history of the spatial development, so how the roads and buildings grew and I also need to look at the migration to this area - probably most important part.

I know the general outline of the migration timeline but I am really interested if anyone has any detailed info/knowledge/books on this? It would be really helpful! Thanks!

Hi Missy,

I can provide you with some data from 1960-1969 and the area around St Chad's, the housing and subsequent business development. Just let me know if I can help.

 :)

Does anybody remember the GREEN SALFORD buses that ran up and down Cheetham Hill Road. I was a nipper then, but I do remember Mum taking me somewhere and the opening gate on the bus. Great reading the posts about Barney's Tip...wow...I also remember there was a small police station close by Elsworth Street, can't remember which street.
I do remember Miles Newsagent and also The Rose & Crown pub on Lord Street.
My brother and I would run down past Strangeways prison and watch the wagons bringing in the prisoners.
And there was always the smell of hops from Boddington's.....still like a boddy's over here in the desert.

I remember the 35 which ran from Bury to Cannon Street in Manchester . This was the only which ran along Cheetham Hill Road.  We sometimes caught it to Heaton Park.  The73 which ran to Whitefield I think terminated at Halfway House.

I think these buses belonged to Whitefield rather than Salford.

I also recall the occasional white and brown Oldham buses which shared the 59 route from Cannon Street via Cheetham Hill Road and Middleton Road to Shaw ( never found out where that was) they always seemed quieter and smoother than Manchester buses.

Thanks...you are right about the 35. I found a picture on line and they were part of the Salford-Manchester buses....the gate was on the front  ;D

Yes, those Oldham Buses were strange looking. I remember Manchester Buses being RED and then in the 1970's they went to that cream and brown colour.

Good old Whitefield and Bury. Such good memories. But not as good as the days in Cheetham Hill.

Hi BigAl. Welcome aboard.

An interesting post and very evocative. The supermarket on Halliwell Lane was Kentons and used to be a cinema called The Shakespeare. It was a really scruffy old place by todays standards but, as you say, the first one in the area and you have to give it credit as being a groundbreaker.  And the Lansdowne road memories were interesting. I knew David Law.... He was a friend of my dad's who he knew from the Beech Hill Club in Hampshire Street Cheetham. We lived in the next street (Bradburn).

Sorry I can't help you with any pictures though, but somebody on here is bound to.
