I am looking to find the Jewish owner of a carpet establishment in or around Cheetham Hill in 1957. I think his name is Jerry

St. Chad's Lad.  Yes we lived at #95 Shirley Rd. right across from it.   They had a fire there one night and I remember my parents waking me up to watch the excitement. That maybe when it closed.  The Alms Hill area right behind it was completely undeveloped back then and my young friends and I used to wander all over it.  Last time I was in Manchester we went to look around and it is now completely developed.

Yes there were a lot of new properties along Shaftsbury rd to the Cardinal st area, I also remember the land behind the old club, there was a small muddy pond where we caught newts and every November 5th we had a huge bonfire, we spent hours on there when we were kids, after they cleared the land and demolished the club the council built an old peoples home on it. I also remember going through "Pegs arch" on the way to Crumpsall park.

We had our carpets supplied by a Jewish chap named Gerald back in the late fifties or early sixties, but I am racking my brains to recall his surname. It might have been a more English-sounding name but he was definitely Jewish as we had a long chat about faith issues. When it comes to me, I'll post it!  ???

Friends of Angel Meadow show on TV ,drug needles and human waste in this park, used by Children. This in the town center. The council say, when reported, needles are cleared within one working day.
Friends of Angel Meadow say ,This is a daily occurrence.
Politicians and nappies must be changed often, and for the same reason

Ref Peter L

We  lived at 62  Shirley Road until 1953.    I think you are the first  person Ive come across on this site who also lived on Shirley Road.   We used to  play on the huge open fields at the back of the Woodlands Hotel.   The only houses on it then were a row of ten or twelve prefabs at the top fronting Shaftesbury Avenue.  I also went briefly to Collegiate School but a few years before your time.
The sandhills at the far end of Shaftesbury ran into Alms Hill so you could get through onto AH Road and then to the Smedley area.
Regarding the houses on CHR at the top of Heywood St , my recollection from about 1946 is that the first houses on the corner may have already been demolished  The first shop in the row going towards the Premier was a newsagents by the name of Coase where I used to get my comics, and I seem to recall that there was a low wall to the left of his shop ie on the Heywood St side as the shops were set back a bit from the road

Your recollection of the newsagent seems correct, in the 60s it was called Makin's I believe.

As I recall he was Gerald Stuart. I think he may have had a shop on Cheetham Hill Rd but I remember him measuring our dining room for a carpet (not fitted) and my mum called in each week to make the payments on it. That would have been late 1950s early 1960s, perhaps, and I was a nipper. I have a feeling his Dad, an older gent, came with him and he got chatting about weighty issues of religion and politics with my folks. Hope that helps.
