Hi
I was born in Cheetham hill in the 50's, Temple House, and then moved to Temple Square. I went to Temple School also. The things you recall I am very familiar with, in particular the old laundry that became the 5 stars chineese chippy. Before that it was an English chippy and my sister worked there in the evenings.
You may be familiar with a schoolfriend of mine who's father ran the tailors shop on Huxley Ave. He was called Romano Giancola and they lived on the opposite side of the road to their shop. They moved back to Sicilly in the late 60's.

Hi Cheethamlad.

I remember the family who ran the laundry on Huxley Avenue. It was Mr & Mrs Melody and their daughter Angela. The Chinese chippy that took over the premises later served great spring rolls. I remember the Chinese lady who, as she wielded the condiments, would ask 'sore finger?' (ie 'salt and vinegar?'), then '[censored] else?'

I was sure it was simply 'Gerald Stuart Carpets'.  Others might remember differently. Then again, the name 'Prospect furnishings is in my head'. Good luck. O0

Hi Cheethamgirl. Thank you for the information, it's a long shot given that it was an age ago, but would you remember what Gerald Stuart looked like and what age he was approximately when he came to measure up for your carpet ?

I was a child then and it would have been in the 1960s.  All I can recall is that he was tall and fairly slender. His father came with him and chatted to my grandmother and my mother. Didn't catch his name. I'm guessing their surname wasn't Stuart originally since they were Jewish gentlemen, but both had Manchester accents, so likely born locally. Don't know if that helps.

I am not sure if it helps, but it is great to receive that information. In case you were wondering, I am illegitimate and my father is a Jewish businessman from the Cheetham Hill area and he had a carpet business or so I have been told. That is all I know really and I am grasping at straws because my mum would not tell me anything and she has passed away now.

I've had a look through Monty Dobkin's book 'Tales of Manchester Jewry and Manchester in the Thirties' and it lists everyone living on Cheetham Hill Road in 1934 but no-one named Stuart. I recall the spelling of the surname as it was printed on my mothers Hire Purchase payment book. Some people posting on here have access to Manchester street directories and could perhaps do a lookup for you, but only if you new the street. Which year were you conceived (don't give out your date of birth) and do you know which street your mother was living in then?  It just might help.

Looking down the afore-mentioned 1934 list (the latest I have), there was a Samuel L. Klevan furniture dealer at 35 Cheetham Hill Rd., and a Sidney L. Klevan, financier, at the same address;  M. Stolberg & Co Ltd had their furniture (makers) showroom at no 31, but not a single carpet dealer back then.

I was conceived in 1958 but my mother was living in Farnworth at the time. She spent a great deal of time in Manchester and went to a couple of night clubs around there on a regular basis. She was a really good seamstress but her day job was working as a clerk in Farnworth Town Hall. She had a lot of Jewish friends in and around the Cheetham Hill area so I assumed having heard mention of a carpet business it would be around that area. I am literally clutching at straws really
