Hi everyone. I was born in Crumpsall hospital 1949. Lived with my parents and older brother in Haliwell lane, Cheetham. My father belonged to Manchester. His family were Jewish. We left Manchester when I was three years old, due to family breakdown. I know so little about the area and wondered if anyone could paint a picture in words for me. Thankyou for reading this.

Hard working supportive communities. Back in the 40s,workers used the bus to get to work, kids walked to school.  Mostly Victorian property, women kept a clean step, even the pavement, looked after all kids no matter whose.
The only downside, dirty smokey air in winter.
Lowery paintings, have a good feel and are common of many areas.

Celeste sums up the thread perfectly, the comments already paint a good picture of the area as it was, all are affectionate and demonstrate what a nice place Cheetham Hill was.  :)

Apologies Loz, I missed this post, if I was describing the area I'd say exactly the same things  O0

Does anyone remember a girl called Mary who lived in the Cheetam Hill during the late 60's and early 70 's. Mary worked as a waitress at various cafes in Manchester City centre, including the Gay Dolphin cafe on Piccadilly. Now it's the Piccadilly tavern. It's not much to go on but I've forgotten her surname. She was from Co. Cork. Any info appreciated. I think she would be in her late 60's or early 70 's.

Amazing - I remember Martin Coffee. He lived in the next street up from where I lived in Wordsworth Avenue. Remember him riding around the streets on his pedal tractor much of the time. His death at such a young age was shocking and tragic.

I was also born in 1959 and will have attended St Chads at around the same time as you. I don't recall much about it although my sister might. I remember twins Peter and Paul Camp and the two catholic nuns - Sisters Theresa and Philomena. There was a teacher who I seem to remember as resembling Mr Drysdale from the Beverley Hillbillies. The dance school you mentioned on Queens Road was Finnegan's I believe.

A friend of mine doubted there had been a school called Notre Dame in Cheetham Hill so I googled it to confirm what I knew to be true and found this compelling thread which has had me engrossed the last few nights. I remember Notre Dame which was considered quite posh. I recall it being surrounded by a high wall flanked by trees and set in lovely grounds.

Pity so much of Cheetham Hill has been redeveloped although my old house on Wordsworth Avenue remains. There are now security gates on most of the old back entrys so thieves can't get round the back. Sign of the times I suppose. The cobbles have also gone - just tarmac now.

Many thanks to cheethamgirl for starting this great thread.

I too went to St Chads and knew Martin, we were all very shocked when he died.

Mrs Greenwood was my teacher and the wicked Sister Theresa stopped me from going to see The Song of Norway at the cinema because I misbehaved in assembly... Pulling girls hair Colin.

Yes they were... I ended up at St Peter Grammar School for Boys then moved to London in 73.

I'm loving all the nostalgic memories on here.
