Hi Celeste,
Glad I put a Smiley in there  :-*

It could however be the reason that left handed children were treated badly in earlier years. Most of the teaching was done via religeous outlets and perhaps the determination that a child mustn't be left handed was the reason for the mis-treatment.

Anyway, back to us superior right handers  ;)

I went to the old St. Willibrords school in Stanton St. Clayton. I am also left handed. We had a teacher there who instilled a sense of respect in us that none of the other teachers ever could. Back then the cane or the strap was just an occupational hazard.

"Frank Murray was a mild mannered bespectacled teacher who never raised his voice, unlike some of the other teachers who would shout and scream at you. He would start the day most morning by saying, "Don't upset me today boys, my ulcer is playing up".  You knew then that you had to behave or else. When you got the cane off  Mr  Murray he made  you feel guilty for letting him down.

Ask any old pupil of Willibrords and Frank Murray had universal affection. Whilst most boys would receive the cane off him for sloppy handwriting or ink blots all over the page, (This was in the days of pen and ink). I was never hit for that particular offence, because he always said that he had never known a left handed pupil who could write neatly. In my case at least he was right. My handwriting is atrocious.  :)

I was one of them. Because I was left handed and they didn't have a left handed woodwork bench, (The vice was in the wrong place) I couldn't do wood work, I just turned up and mixed that horrible smelling glue. I was given a sympathy merit pass even though I didn't make a thing. For years I always put on my CV. Merit pass in woodwork and 25 foot breadth of bath swimming certificate, (Earned at Barmouth St. baths.)  ;D  I bet you know lots of my friends who attended Ravy in the 50s and 60s.

I went to Harpurhey High School for Girls, Church Lane, Moston, Manchester (1951-1956).  In 1952(?) it changed its name to North Manchester High School for Girls.
We had an excellent Head Mistress, Miss Webster.  She only had to walk into the room for everyone to be on their best behaviour - she never had to raise her voice!
I didn't enjoy school, but looking back, they probably were 'the best days of my life'!
