Jack Rosenthal

Jack Rosenthal was one of this country's best writers. He was born in Cheetham Hill Manchester in 1931. I personally think his TV plays were pure genius.
I have just purchased his Autobiography and I am so looking forward to reading it...but I already know it will be a delight!! ;)

He wrotethe pilot to the TV series London's Burning which was a great look at a woman trying to get into a fire Brigade domiinated by men and drew on real fire-fighter experiences. The series degenerated into soap opera with occassional fires once it passed out of his hands.

For a very short time when I was at Primary School in Manchester we had a teacher who I thought was called Mr. Rosenthorn. My memories of him are very much like Jack Rosenthall. I like to think it was him. No one seems to know!!

I'd be very surprised if he were a primary school teacher at any point. He was a fantastic playwright. He wrote The Evacuees and also Barmitzvah Boy. He was married to Maureen Lipman, who he met when they lived in Didsbury. A fantastic talent. there is now a road named after him just off whitworth street, manchester.
