I was born at Crossley Hospital in 1954. My mother didn't rate it much and didn't go there for the next one. The photo here is the only one I've seen. The story goes that my grandmother in her excitement ran up the fire escape. Can anyone confirm if that was possible?

Crikey!  I worked here in the school summer holidays in around 1970.  Packing the Christmas selection boxes - yes folks, your Christmas biscuits are baked 6 months earlier! - 43 hour week for the princely wage of £6.13s.11d.  Mars were paying £12 but it was on the other side of town.  It was the most awful place to work, sitting at a conveyor belt, picking 3 Lincoln and 5 Bourbon biscuits at a time and putting them in passing boxes.  Each day we moved down one place so we had a bit of variety with the types of biscuit.  In my 2nd week I was delighted to be sent to the chocolate room.  We packed chocolate marshmallows -= one for me, one for the box.  After 2 days or so I couldn't care if I never saw another marshmallow as long as I lived!  The smell of hot gingernut dough at 6 am would turn your stomach too.

That said, John, I've just realised the CWS biscuit works where I worked was in Cheetham (down Smedley Lane, I think)!  Is this a different one?

Such a shame, John.  I moved away in 1973 but have fond memories of my early days in Cheetham (Co-op biscuits apart, of course!).

Two great photos of Star Hall! No sign of a fire escape. Would be interested to hear if anyone knew if there was one, so I can confirm or not my birth story.
