Hi, just joined this amazing forum and excited to learn some things.  I too was born at the Star Hostel in 1959 to a destitute mother dying of leukemia. It was then named Crossly hospital and run by the Salvation Army. If anyone has information about the the whereabouts of this building and if it still stands, I would love to hear from you. Been living in the South of England for the past 35 years and reconnecting with my origins, as you do in mid life.  :smitten:

Welcome , yes it was named crossly before star hall, mr crossly had a motor / marine engine company and was a benefactor he purchased a dance hall which eventually became star hall, it was at the bottom of Ashton new road a little further on from Manchester City’s ground , I have tried to put a photo of star hall on here but failed , I’m sure some of the good folk on here are more tech savvy than myself and could possibly put photo and a map on ,

Locate and stand near the old 'Ancoats Works' on Pollard Street, across the way you will see the recently named 'Crossley Court' - this was where Star Hall was once located as per the Manchester archives photo'.

Part of the Hall was where the road branches, the larger hall was at Crossley Court further in the distance.

I have positioned the google map camera to show as described above.

My link at post number *8* is still functional for looking at the old photo's.

I was born in Crossley Hospital Ancoats in 1950 my mum paid private a Guinea a day she said that because she was 48 hours in labour she ended up being charged another 2 guineas. Would love to see a picture of the hospital if anyone has any and any information would be welcome. Unfortunately all mementos my mum had were destroyed when her house was destroyed by a gas explosion in 2001.
