Hi Chipsandgravy great memories, and myself being born in 14 spring street and there until I married in 1967. Street was excellent, climb the railings into the school yard to play or kick a football in the street. loads of kids and friends, from all the local streets. Many happy memories and been in oz for over 40 years, and just been away looking for gold, with my old primary school lifelong friend from summer street, who also emigrated a few years after us.We all miss hollands pies and puddings. Rob :)

Hi SJ, sorry late reply. Not sure where The Avenue was, used to deliver papers, what part of C-on M, sounds like a nice spot.I am not sure where St Stephens was either, so didn't know much about C-on-m,Ha. was that Shakespear st way.I think quiligotiss? was a tiling place also, my brother in law worked there in the 60's. I don't remember the printers Taylors, we had a printers in the next street to us , Taskers. Which school did you go to after primary, and what sort of work did you take up. I played a lot of football, until coming to oz and played outdoor here until 53, and continued indoor 5 a side until I was 64, still miss it. It is now gone 11pm, here in west oz and Tottenham v Chelsea just started, so will get back to the game, good to hear from c- on- m friends. Catch up later, Rob

I was born in Everton Road, St. Stephens playground was just on the other side of the road to where I lived and I remember the Print work well, the street outside was often stewn with sheets of labels for products like Princess food tins etc., Quilligotti I think though was more tiles than bricks, They specialised in huge floor floor slabs with mosaic patterns etc.  I often watched them being polished up with what looked like giant floor scrubbers.

Hi Frank,  wasn't sure where St. Stephens was, but would have seen it. We used to go to a little barber shop on the corner of Everton rd. Must have been a good barber, because we had a local one we used to all use on upper brook st. C-on-M, Stan the barber, I bumped into him years later when I was married, he was working in Manchester Royal Infirmary, recognised him straight away, not sure if his surname was Schofield, as one of our school friends John, may have been his son, but could be wrong on that one. We also used to go to the Sand Park, off Stockport rd, and Grey st, remember the vinegar works on the corner of Grey st. I think. Rob

Remember the vinegar works well, also the smell, pretty bad at times. It actually became Sarsons Vinigar after they, Sarsons, bought it out, the brand is still going but it has been passed on from one mega conglomerate to another, god know where it is actually made now, but if you went out shopping around here[/size] for vinigar and you wanted a brand name, rather than a supermarkets brand, you would still plumb for Sarsons.
It had a 'factory' Chimney, I remember one day a steeplejack fell off it, there where grisly tales  of his head being sheared off as he hit something on the was down  :-\ . whether that bit was true I cannot say for sure, I do know that Grey Street was cordend off for the rest of that day. I am sure it wasn't a pretty sight whatever happened.

Hi Frank, yes funny how you remember the vinegar smell, me too. I do remember the chimney. I have a vague memory of the steeplejack falling, any idea around what year. Sounds pretty gruesome whatever happened. Didn't know about the takeovers. Nice emo face, Ha.
Are you still local yourself. I remember lots of movie days, Apollo, Kings, Shaftsbury? sounds wrong, was on stockport road. Also did all the Rusholme area cinemas as well. Also saw The Kinks at the Apollo, around 65/66. Went to Elizabethan, Oasis club, Jungfrau? saw some great groups in the 60's, and also saw the beatles at Middleton town hall, I think. Good to catch up on old memories, spoke to my brother in Manchester last night, and said about the forum to him also. Enjoy reading other members memories.Rob

You are correct in saying The Shaftesbury, but also a little further along the road, towards Levenshulme, was the Queens. I remember one day, my friends and I, went to the Saturday manatee and in the dark, watching Hopalong Cassidy, I suppose, one of my friends thought the Cinema's cat had jumped which he proceeded to stroke until the lights went up revealing a massive rat. Naturally he nearly jumped out of his skin. I never understood why the rat would have been so tame, maybe it was a bit senile, or had got use to its surroundings. Needles to say we never went there again, Apparently the Queens was built over an old river, Gore Brook, apparently the name means Gore means dirty or filthy, There is little to be seen of the river, other than brief glimpses where it remains uncovered.

We certainly moved in similar circles, I frequented the Oasis, Often featuring 'The Hollies' quite a lot also in the very early days, in fact on day one, of the Elizabethan, that was in the CIS building complex, as well as once or twice in the Jungfrau, but to be hones not so keen on the later. But also did the Top Ten Club (Belle Vue) and the twisted wheel and often to finish well into  the night, the Three Coins, naturally on Fountain street :) , Finished my clubbing days at the Bodega (on Cross lane), where I met my wife

Good one Frank, wouldn't have been too keen on a rat on my lap, Ha. Top Ten club was what I called the Elizabethan at Belle Vue, infamous Jimmy Saville. great groups on there. Don't remember 3 coins, fountain st,Ha very good, didn't do the Twisted Wheel or The Bodega, but my friend went there, I think more of a jazz club?Your wife would have had similar taste in music? Did you go to The Den Of The Gods, that might have been where the Oasis once was.Saw Del Shannon a couple of times at Fagans Saw Gene Vincent at the oasis. Freddie and the Dreamers regular 2nd group at Oasis in early years. Just on the venues, went to a popular one in Levenshulme a couple of times Browns, and also a cinema, opposite Albert Road. More memories ha.

My error, you are correct in that the Elizabethan was the venue for the Top Ten Club, The CIS was the New Century Hall, though that place seemed to have it all, I always think it lacked  atmosphere. The Bodega was know for its Jazz but it also had at least one night a week more pop, A couple of regular groups where ;The Pedlars (ok they where classed a bit jazzy but more soul) and The Country Gents

Does anyone know where I can purchase old photographs of Spring Street in Chorlton on Medlock.
I am trying to research an ancestor(s) who lived at Spring Street between 1870 and 1901.
They originally lived at 13 Spring Street and then moved to 2 Spring Street
