Thanks Tony, yep, that is exactly how I remember it, with a long carpeted walk once you went through the doors shown.

Memories of Johnny Berry's bike shop have also lingered with me, i used to drool over the 'Viking' brand bikes but the prices were way beyond my reach. My bike was made of bits and pieces salvaged from bomb sites!

I saw Godzilla v King Kong & Reptilicus and other monster type films at the 'Troc', further down towards (opposite) Dickenson road, i remember Ted the paper man standing outside the Casino cinema shouting "Empire news football final" every saturday night with a huge pile of papers over his arm, both cinema's were ideal haunts for 53 bus routers. The Casino cinema was burnt down about 1960.

There was also a 'Rusholme theatre' same side as the Troc' which was demolished and replaced by a petrol station in the 1970's.

Hi, my befuddled brain tells me I do remember Mayfair cleaners, but, hey, sometimes I cannot remember my own name, hehe. How about 'penny for the guy-ing' outside the public WC on boundaries of Whitworth park, opposite a pub. Remember this drunk Irish guy came out and kicked our guy to pieces! Anyone remember Cordingley's garage on Great Western Street, and the vintage car on the flat roof, can you imagine that today? Wouldn't last the night.

I used to love going to visit relatives who lived on Horton Road in Rusholme especially on a match day as the double decker buses lined up all along that road.  The old fashioned buses that were all the same so it was quite impressive to see them all lined up.

Also remember the cinemas and the Temperance Bar.  Tried sasparilla once and found it horrible but it was a bit of a joke in a Western series that was on TV at the time.

We lived in C-on-M so would walk up to Platt Fields sometimes and then moan about walking back!  There was more in Platt Fields than in Whitworth Park which we had to pass to get to Platt Fields.

That pub opposite Whitworth Park has just been turned into a coffee bar.  It kept going as a pub until quite recently.  I also remember Cordingleys Garage and the car on the roof.  They put it up there to get people talking about the garage and it worked.

Mixed feelings about Curry Mile - traffic jams, inconsiderate parking, noise, mess but things weren't perfect before they curry shops moved in so ...

We lived on Horton Road and I used to go to the Troc every week. My diaries from the 60s show many of the films we saw there. Saturday morning matinees too!
Always ended the day with a drink in the Temperance bar. I loved getting saspirilla from the big barrels on the wall. Had no idea till then that the temperance movement was strong in the area and that is why Maine Road was renamed to this from its original (Dog Kennel Lane!) in order to celebrate the first temperance law passed in the state of Maine.
I used to deliver newspapers from Levetts newsagents opposite where the BBC studios were on Dickenson Road and used to see the bands arriving for early BBC Top of the Pops (which started there). If you lived in Rusholme and had a radiogram in the early 60s and knew the frequency to tune it into you could listen to the live rehearsals from the bands.
My family ran two junior football teams - Rusholme Rovers and Fallowfield Town. They played in the Moston and Rusholme League in the 60s along with Platt Villa, Clayton Celtic and others. Platt Fields was their home ground.

There was a different car on the roof in later years, a small yellow Skoda i think?

Does anyone remember a bikers cafe called The Shell Bar on Wilmslow Road? the owner was a Greek Cypriot it was directly facing ATS tyres and Grandale Street around 1968.

Yes seems it's not, some football players did go into business, I think Lou Macari has or had a shop near Old Trafford, and then I keep seeing a van or lorry with Paul Walsh which may be coincidence being a more common name
