Can anyone remember the name of the schools outfitters on Wilmslow Road, from memory in the block opposite the junction with Great Western Street? It was cheaper than the other alternative for my school uniform (Horne Brothers in town) but I recall being embarrassed by the inferior quality of the blazer compared to Hornes'.

Can't remember a school outfitters there?  I lived there until 1970,
there was one, I think, on Princess Rd?
I used to have to go above Barretts in Manchester

I think the school outfitters was named Andersons! I. too went there for my school blazer, and you're right, it WAS inferior! :P

I Used to go to a school outfitters, above Barretts shoes, on Piccadilly, it began with "B"
they weren't inferior at all

Think the one above Barretts was called Vaughans - but don't remember much about it really.  My mum bought me the uniform at 11 and it was still too big when I left school at 16.  Especially the gaberdeen!

Well I know it's a popular parental ploy (when minimising expenditure) to say "you'll grow into it" but that's not good, especially at the age when we're getting concerned how we look!

Yes you are right......but the uniforms were so so expensive,
My mum couldn't afford a new gaberdine or blazer

Indeed, but as I said before, the uniforms from Andersons were so inferior it didn't exactly make us feel good wearing them. They looked dreadful alongside the ones from Hornes.  The majority of boys wore the Hornes unforms probably as the outfitter had the benefit of a city centre location which only made us Andersons boys stand out even more as the poor relations. I do remember persuading my parents to buy the next uniform from Hornes. The angst of youth, LOL!

Central Grammar, by the time I joined in 1960, the school was in the throes of relocation, so first years were at Whitworth Street and the rest of the school at the new building on Kirkmanshulme Lane/Pink Bank Road. Relocation was completed in 1963. The old building became Mather College, then Shena Simon and now it's the Shena Simon Campus of Manchester College.

Thought you might like to see this piccie - taken whilst waiting for the Olympic torch to come through Rusholme in June 2012.  The pub is next to where Kwiksave was so the first junction is Claremont Road/Wilmslow Road.
