This talk explores the estimated 12,000 Irish veterans of the Second world War who came back to Ireland after 1945. It examines their reception by the de Valera government and how they were treated by the Irish public.
It combines the personal stories of the men and women themselves with the view from both Dublin and London. It also has contemporary relevance as it also explores the controversy regarding Irish military deserters, their punishment and the 2012 pardon.
