Hello Frank Wharram,

Remember me. Bob Ellis? We were good friends all those years ago. As I remember it you wer a paatrol leader in the scouts. I was in Owl patrol. Eckersley and Russel took this City boy on his first real experience of the Peak and Lake districts.
I can still taste that dreadful stew Robert's made at Youlgreave and you and I following a little gill up the hillside above Grasmere.

The sadistic (and that's being kind) woodwork teacher you remember was name Beale. I think he was the only human being I have genuinely hated. he was a vile person. I promised myself that one day I would go back and batter him and have always regretted that I never did. Rorke of course should never have been allowed near small boys but authorities were more careless then.

I hav only just discovered this site and wonder how many of our intake (1944) are alive kicking, and contribute to this. For sure there won't be many older than us.

One thing that has bugged me for years. There are little blue plaques all over Manchester celebrating some very minor people. There is nothing on that building on Whitworth St. about Chadwick (Nobel Prize winner) Alcock (First man to pilot a 'plane non-stop across the Atlantic. Donat (Academy Award winner) or Statham (Great fast bowler who was once England's record wicket taker.

All ex-pupils and I am sure there are more.

STOOGOL,   just a quick note. Where did you find the school roll that you published, I have been down to the Central library to try and find other years but they have no , repeat no record of us even existing. Can you let me know where you got the details so I can do some more research. Answer me here or on,

Many thanks ........ Tony.

Hi all

I just joined the forum, having found it via Facebook.

I was at MCGS from 1961 to 1968, year one in Whitworth Street then in Kirkhamshulme Lane. I don't remember much about Whitworth Street, except standing above the grill over the kitchens in winter - it stank of cabbage but it did keep us warm! Also, Mr Hale(s) was year 1 form teacher and he ran the recorder group I think.

Found myself singing the school song, Non Nobis Domine, last week for some reason so guess that's what brought me here.

Most memorable, the whole year being banned from Lewis’s for (who?) dropping stink bombs 5 floors down the escalator!

Bob Ellis you mention the music teacher Roarke(sp?).  If you started school in '44 he was still abusing the younger boys in the late 50's when I was there!   Amazing that he was never  stopped.  I remember talking to my mother about him and she just shrugged it off as normal behaviour.  Today he would be in jail.

You are right ab out Rorke. We were naiver in those days and wouldn't think to complain to our mothers. (most of our fathers were away in the forces), but I remember nagging my mother to let me go into long trousers. Rorke was a disgusting man and at that time was also closely connected with the Cathedral choir. Nowadays he would be spotted much sooner- at least I hopre so.

King David School had not been opened then and Whiitworth St was the closest high school to the main centre of the Jewish Community About 10% of the pupils were Jewish and often distinguished themselves academically. I wonder if any of them read this website.

Bob,  're your post about  old boys from the school. I have  been digging and good god, you  would be amazed at what I found. There are 19 old boys who I have traced that went on to great things. If you wish will list them for you. We should certainly asked why no recognition to the school that produced these good, old central grammar boys.
Let me know if you want me to list them.,,,!,,,,,,...TONY,

Please do. After that we can chase the powers that be to attach some form of memorial to the building.

When were you a pupil?

Bob , I attended the school 1961 to 66 we were the last to attend Whitworth St.

Right ..... here goes,

Sir John Alcock .... (first flight across the Atlantic )
Sir James Chadwick .... (Nobel prize Physics )
Robert Donat ...... (Winner of an Oscar )
Prof  Robert  Edwards   CBE  ...... (invention of IVf )
Rt Rev George Giggall  OBE ...... (became   a Bishop )
Prof  Edward Gregson ...... (Principal Royal Northern School of Music)
Sir  Leslie Kirkley  CBE ..... (Director of Oxfam 1961 to 74)
James L Tuck..... (Physicist ..Manhattan Project )
Brian Statham CBE ..... (At one time England's record wicket taker )
Sir William Downward ...... (First Lord Lieutenant Greater Manchester)
Prof  Frank Cambray .... (chairman Geological Science Michigan University USA)
Prof  William Deer .... (vice Chancellor University of Cambridge)

Arthur Knowles .... (Secretary General British Chamber  of Commerce)
James Bingham ...... (Chairman Greater Manchester County Council)

Even  though all  will be either dead of well retired it seems a shame that a school with so many distinguished ex pupils should not be recognised.

I personally have made it clear that I did in fact hate my time at the school, yet it must have given me a good grounding for later life.

Hope you find the list interesting............TONY.....
