Jake,
I know someone who bought a car on ebay and its still going strong.
My Chesterfield was  in Material when i bought it second hand from my local auction house
i had it recovered after 25 years in a fabric it was lovely and i had that for about ten years i
was in a car accident and needed a higher back for my neck so gave it away..Its still in perfect
condition..you just have to be careful but if you look around you can get a great bargain..
When i had mine recovered the man who did it told me the frame was solid oak so i did well.

Hi Jean,

You've all found great stuff, I want to as well :) I'll keep looking. I spoke to the guys at Newman & Bright and they advised going for a leather sofa as it lasts for longer and is easier to clean. Once you got your one recovered was it totally clean?

Sorry to hear about your OCD problem :)

Its so wierd, I came to this site about to buy a Patchwork sofa from a shop near me (http://www.newmanandbright.co.uk/designer-sofas/patchwork-collection.html) and I wanted to know if there were any ways of getting stuff like that cheaper.

Now, I am booked to go with my wife to the next auction next time we have a chance, my wife doesnt know whats come over me, I never used to know about these things, I always bought things brand new and complained for years about the expense.

Thanks for enlightening me Jean, I'll post an update after we go to the auction!

Find the style you like then get the firm to order material in what you fancy....I find that leather ages quicker than cloth
think maybe its the oils from the bodies. acid and such like.

Don't forget to check the commission charged by the auction house.  They charge the seller and the buyer and usually that's then VAT rated too, so you need to count that into your budget and adjust your bids accordingly.  For instance, if you bid £100 and the house commission is 15% + VAT, you'll pay another £18 on top.   Good luck though!  O0

Interesting read's but how the heck are you going to get one home? especially ebay.
There was a guy in Rio who carries full size fridge freezers on his back up zillions of steps, but Iv'e not seen him around here.
Politicians and nappies must be changed often, and for the same reason

Ha ha, I never thought of that. Just assumed there would be a guy there miraculously waiting to carry it for me. What does everyone at the auctions do? Dont they have a delivery service?

My caramel leather two seater sofa and two armchairs has been my best buy as regards lounge furniture, previously I've bought dralon and chintz and cleaning and washing removeable covers which becomes a struggle to get them into the proper shape is a no-no.

Leather can just be wiped clean and has lasted twice as long up to now.  If it's cold then sit on a cushion or a throw.

I wouldn't think an auction house has a FREE delivery service.  Best find out before you buy anything you can't carry.  ;)

@Lozflan Its cold on the bum but once you sit there for 5 minutes, its as warm as an oven. You dont get that with fabric, do you :)

@Celeste yeah its definitely easier to clean and it just has a neater look

@cupcake surely i cant be the first to have this delivery problem, will ask around to see what others did.

Delivery has crept in because auctions now routinely include online bidders, but it ain't cheap.  You can usually see the price under the auction lot as it's listed online.
