Slang Contributions(Revised)
« on: 01:10:06, 24/07/07 »
                                        Slang Contribution Appeal!

I, Jorgen Naipaul, a lexicographer from Canada, welcome information from Contributors. I am looking for slang that is being used by ‘the man on the street’ - for instance: contemporary youth slang, urban slang, street slang, black slang, music slang, or any type of slang – particularly those you have used or may have heard.

Due to the fact that I have conducted exhaustive research – please do not refer me to websites, books, articles, etc.

Contributors will be acknowledged in upcoming publications, should their contribution/s be fresh and fit the format outlined below.

Headword (or Phrase): e.g.  “Awesome”.

Part of speech: e.g. noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc.

Geographical origin: e.g. US, UK, Aus, NZ, Caribbean, Northern English, Scotland, Ireland, South African, India, Bangladesh, etc..

Meaning: (Definition)

Origin, if possible:

Typical users: e.g. students, teenagers, office employees, etc.

Example(s) of use: (a direct quotation or an invented example).

Any Extra Information: (where you heard it, in what context, how old it is (or a guesstimate), how widespread its use is, whether it is always used as an insult, a compliment, etc.)

If it is too much detail, the most important is the word and its meaning
and preferably its example of use.

OR  use private messaging facility, should one be available.

Thank you very much.

Regards,

Jorgen Naipaul

I think the reason people use slang is because they dont want people to know what their on about. So publishing it in a book sort of betrays it in a way, dont you think jorgen?

Just making a point in a lighthearted sort of manner :)

Jorgen, you are asking for information as if you want to use it for your own publication
you are imposing a lot of restrictions and this really may not be the best way to encourage dialogue to benefit your purpose

I think you have to understand the reason for slang, as explained by the first reply you got and work out which communities it is generated amidst, before spreading outwards as a novelty item of coinage relevant to a few people who want to gain credit from it's knowledge because it makes them appear street-wise and in control of their subculture perhaps !!

There are lots of books on the subject already, many of them spoofs but a few serious ones exist and a guarenteed way to kill youth cultrure and language is for a wider community to start using it - books on dialect, slang dictionaries, etc abound - there were books called Lanky spoken here - someone even translated the Bible into Rap.
