A woman's body has been found in a canal in Greater Manchester, police have said.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said officers were called to Audenshaw Road, Audenshaw, Tameside, at about 09:20 GMT.

They found the woman's body in the water close to the Boundary Pub and Restaurant.

Police said a cordon was in place and inquiries surrounding the death were ongoing.

A man's body has been pulled from a disused canal in Bury.

Police and emergency services were called to the Manchester, Bury and Bolton canal, off Bury Road, around 8.30am this morning after receiving reports that a person had been seen floating in the water.

Is this happening in other cities, it seems not so why criminal activity is being denied leaves questions which need to be answered, if only for public safety

Some do commit suicide, not surprising in depressed areas.

Number 4 for the month.

Shortly after 8.30am this morning, Thursday 28 January 2016, the body of a man was found in the canal in Ashton-Under-Lyne.

A passerby rang emergency services after they spotted the corpse in Portland Basin, near the town centre.

Emergency crews were called to the scene, behind the Portland Basin Museum on Portland Place, and discovered a body in the water.

The man is white and believed to be in his 40s or 50s, police said.

A specialist diving unit was scrambled to Portland Basin to recover the body on Thursday morning.

A GMP spokesman said it was too early to establish how the man died or whether there are any suspicious circumstances.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a man found in a canal in Wigan.

Police and fire crews were called to the Leeds and Liverpool canal in Abram at 11:00 GMT on Sunday.

The body of the man, believed to be in his early 50s, was recovered from the water near the Dover Lock pub, off Warrington Road.

Greater Manchester Police have not released the identity of the man and say the coroner has been informed.

The body has been identified as that of Peter Grant, aged 51, of Farcroft Avenue, Radcliffe. He was discovered in the nearby Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal, off Bury Road, on Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the Radcliffe and Bury border, which is in a local beauty spot popular with walkers, at 8.30am after being alerted by a passerby, who saw the body in the water.

Firefighters assisted police in recovering the body from the water. Forensics teams were also on the scene as investigations got underway into the circumstances of his death.

It is believed that Mr Grant had been out with his girlfriend on the Saturday night and had left her house alone at around 2.30am to walk to his home. On his way towards Farcroft Avenue, he fell into the water.

A police source reported that there were signs he had struggled to get out of the canal. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and no indication of third party involvement.

Neighbours said he was a "lovely" man.

An inquest is due to be opened into his death at Bury and Rochdale Coroner's Court.

Frank Shenton, aged 62, said he saw police activity as he went for his morning walk.

He said: “I go down there for a walk for a bit of exercise.

“That morning there was a police officer there blocking off the road, so I walked round and saw the police.

“I walked on the bridge and there was a car parked there and cars do not park there.”

Tributes have also been paid to Mr Grant on social media.

Chelsea Avison tweeted: "Can't believe it was Pete who was found dead in Radcliffe canal, you meant so much to a lot and didn't deserve to die. R.I.P Pete."

Tragic. I did see a documentary on Channel 4 about a possible "pusher". As mentioned accidents do happen and people get drunk and may fall in. Still seems too much of a re-occurrence though. Surprised no independent documentary makers have expressed an interest in covering this in more depth.

One man recently released from hospital, was dropped at the wrong address and being blind fell into a canal. Luckily he was rescued  by a man, who turned out to be a lottery winner.
The hospital is investigating.

I read about this, the poor man could have died, it is shocking and all the more so as it could have happened to any of our relatives - no doubt he and his family will get the standard apology - doesn't make up for what happened  or what could have happened.

I'm not saying that there won't be any link between any of these deaths but we need to remember that canals are potentially dangerous places, especially at night and especially if you add alcohol to the mix.
