Louis van Gaal has been sacked as manager of Manchester United, with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho set to be named as his replacement.

Van Gaal, 64, leaves after two years of a three-year contract and is discussing severance terms.

The former Netherlands boss is believed to earn around £6.4m a year.

Mourinho's appointment is expected to be confirmed after the 53-year-old Portuguese meets senior United officials on Tuesday.

The club were expected to confirm Van Gaal's departure on Monday, having spoken to the Dutchman, but as of 17:00 BST there was no official announcement.

United have made an offer to Ryan Giggs, Van Gaal's assistant, for him to stay at Old Trafford, but it is not known what role he would have and whether he would accept.

BBC Sport reported on Saturday that United's FA Cup win over Crystal Palace would be Van Gaal's last game in charge.

Feel sorry for him, poor guy having to sign on every fortnight, quing up with the great unwashed and having his benifits refused because he was 5 min late getting there. ;D

Last December when Jose was having trouble at Chelsea, there was a discusion on 5 live and I text them saying he wanted to be sacked because Old Trafford was waiting for him.

Personaly I think he'll fail. :smitten:

Would you mind getting sacked if 6million was in the offing?

Many managers may not, and probably regard 'inbetween jobs' as a holiday

He got a lot wrong at Chelsea starting with his temperamental rant at the female physio - last time I heard she was going to sue him, this set a lot of the players against him, so he'll have to be more 'restrained'

Eric Cantona believes Jose Mourinho is the wrong man for United, he thinks United should have gone for Pep Guardiola - Cantona was asked if he would want to be United's manager one day, he said he would.
