Trip to Manchester
« on: 19:07:33, 02/09/07 »
Good evening everybody!

I'am planing a trip to Manchester next year.
I cannot even say why I want to visit Manchester instead of London like the most tourists wich are comming to the UK. (I'am not from the UK).

Maybe you can give me some tipps and advices that support my inexplainable "obsession".  :D ;)
What would you do if you would visit Manchester?
Is it worth comming to manchester at all?
How long would you stay?
Where would you go?
Is it also worth visiting the Area outside Manchester?

I tought it would be the best to ask the natives themselvs.  :)

I'am waiting for your answers!
Thanks.  :)

depends how old you are and what your interests are too,  there is a very busy nightlife in Manchester for anyone usually up to the age of mid-thirties at a guess, there are plenty of museums, art galleries etc. are you looking for anythin g specific?

Then there are the football teams Manchester United and Manchester City  - both big clubs

Well I'm 21.
But I'm not very much into visiting pubs and clubs because I don't like to drink much alcohol and it is said that british people drink LOOOOAAAAADS.    :-\

What would you say for how many days should a tourist stay AT LEAST? :P

how much you can afford, what you want to see, being 21 - you can spend a lot at the club scene, and if you like fashion, we have Harvey Nicholls, Kendals, Jigsaw and lots of famous designer names,  I am imagining you are a student - funded by your parents to some extent?

Yea I'am a student. ;)

I don't want to spend much more than 300 Euro.
I know that isn't much but I'am not planing a very long stay.
Only some days.

I believe the night scene is very expensive right?
What about eating and drinking in general? It's very expensive in the UK right?

a few days seems about right for a first visit, there are places like McDonalds and Burger King, they do salads now, and I think some places give discount to students.  Are you from Italy?

cirro why would you like to go to Manchester for a trip?
Since you have decided to go there "next year" means that you have already heard of something nice in Manchester... :P

You cant just go somewhere because u want to go somewhere...
There must be a reason :P

If u afford only 300 euro = 200 pounds its nothing :P
You can just visit museums and have a look at the market...

anyway be more specific and you will get more answers... ;)

hello! :)

What makes you suppose that I'm from Italy?   :)

I'm from Germany.

But if someone will ask me where I come from then I will naturally not say that I'm from Germany because I heared (and I can Imagine) that we are not welcome in the UK. I will just say that I'm from Norway or Danmark.  ;D *undercover*
Everybody will believe me because I speak a bit norwegian.   O0

Btw, your answer already helped me alot (saying that 200 pounds are nothing).
Manchester is obviously a very expensive place (like the entire UK). ;D
Maybe I should really think about what I actually want there and then come back and ask questions. It's just that the flight is very cheap and that's a great opportunity for me to go somewhere where I've never been. :)

Manchester is cheaper than other places in UK.

So the reason to visit Manchester is the cheap flight ;)

If I were you I would :
1) Search for a good and cheap accomodation place to stay
2) Search in the internet what kind of sightseeing-entertainment does the town offer
3) Think of what am I willing to do and why do I want to spend money there

:P :)

Germans are not hated inManchester - I had german students stay with me two years on the run from Lingen - and they clearly loved it here - - there is a Goethe Institute in Manchester too.

Places to stay - bed and breakfasts are cheaper than hotels -  food and drink - there are lots of places across the price range from cheap to expensive - there are hundreds of good restaurants - must dine areas are Chinatown - city centre and the Curry Mile just north in Rusholme - places to see - Mosely Street Art Gallery, the town hall, inside and outside - the manchester museum and the science and Industry museums - these are free apart from any special exhibitions - nightlife - lots of decent modestly priced bars and there is no shame in drinking non-alcoholic drinks in bars - Tons to see and do - you won't be bored or have to pay too much - and you wiill see little anti-german prejudice

Is wild camping allowed in the peak district or only on a campingground.
