Manchester United record goalscorer Wayne Rooney has rejoined Everton for an undisclosed fee, 13 years after leaving the Merseyside club.

Rooney, 31, played 559 times for United, scoring 253 goals.

He won five Premier League titles and each of the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup once after joining from Everton for £27m in 2004.

Rooney, who has signed a two-year deal, said he was "ecstatic" and his "first game back will be an emotional day".

"It's a great feeling to be back. I cannot wait to meet the lads, get on the training pitch and then get on the pitch to play," he added.

Rooney's return comes as United look set to sign Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, with a £75m deal for the Belgium international agreed between the two clubs.

Everton confirmed Rooney will wear the number 10 shirt previously worn by Lukaku.

His first game against Man U will be as interesting as the first season against Everton, when he tried to be invisible.

I think his record speaks for him -

Wayne Rooney's return to his first club Everton has ended a 13-year association with Manchester United.

During that time, he has captained the club, made 559 appearances, scored 253 goals, including a volley against Newcastle and an overhead kick against Manchester City that will surely go down as two of the greatest United have ever scored.

He won five league titles, an FA Cup, three League Cups, the Champions League, the Europa League and a Club World Cup.

He was named PFA Player of the Year in 2010, was twice the Young Player of the Year, and three times was named in the team of the year.
