Maxine Peake has been appointed an honorary professor of literature and performance by the University of Manchester.

The actress said she was "thrilled" to be part of the "education of our next generation of creative minds".

"I'm looking forward to working with the students and hope to learn alongside them and see what we can achieve together," she said.

Bolton-born Peake won critical acclaim for her recent work on Black Mirror.

Her previous credits also include The Theory of Everything, Shameless, Dinnerladies and Three Girls.

Professor Alessandro Schiesaro, head of Manchester University's School of Arts, Languages and Cultures, described her as an "icon".

He praised the "vast experience" she had gained throughout a "brilliant career".

Peake recently joined the cast of an upcoming period drama about the Peterloo Massacre, directed by multi-award winning British director Mike Leigh.

Has the fact that he believes she is an 'icon' influenced him, and a popular activist?  :-\

The son quite likes her too, I liked her in 'Dinnerladies' but not sure if she merits being a professor ;)

Of course being a 'lefty' made it a lot easier for the uni to appoint her.

I believe she also played Hamlet. And David Suchet has played Lady Bracknell. The world is losing its gender stereotypes!

I worked at a university for many years ,met lots of  lovely people and a few bad ones , but some of the academics live in a la la  world ,we used to joke that certain people at the top would buy London Bridge off you if you offered it to them. Giving this excellent actress a Honorary professorship is just like those who give members of the royal family a cluster of medals , worthless .for all the top roles ms Peake has played most of the people I know just remember her in dinner ladies, but maybe that’s cos we are too common.right where’s me whippet and flat cap

I think Maxine Peake is more than just an actress, she is an inspiration to young people, especially to young women. She is a rights campaigner, a staunch Socialist, a writer and a person of rare talent. It seems unfair to write off someone with whom you are unfamiliar, Parky. Maybe your whippets would enjoy watching a production of Hamlet.

Same here, but us ignorant Northerners wouldn't appreciate it anyway, I always preferred a Castella  myself.  ;D
I think Jim was right though, it was the staunch socialist thing that swung it.[size=78%]

Let me hazard a guess now........would she be a staunch socialist of the very rich champagne type, perchance?
