More than 30 homes have been evacuated as a huge moorland fire continues to spread in Greater Manchester.
The blaze on Saddleworth Moor has been declared a "major incident" and the Army is on standby to step in.
The fire began on Sunday night, reignited on Monday during the hot weather and then spread throughout Tuesday, fanned by evening winds.
Thirty-four homes in Carrbrook, near Stalybridge, were evacuated but there are no reported injuries.
Anthony Leach, who lives there, said the smell of smoke is "in every room".

"It's like you could almost smoke mackerel in there," he added.
Great Manchester Fire and Recue Service (GMFRS) confirmed the blaze was spreading, with smoke and flames seen for miles.

Talking with my sister on the phone today, she lives in Stockport, and was telling me how bad the air is in her neck of the woods.

Yes, my daughter has kept my Grandson indoors, the little fella loves playing in the garden, but best to be safe, I feel sorry for the people in the immediate vicinity, hope they stay safe.
Reports suggesting people are turning up to watch, unbelievable.

Local business owners and Moorland managers suspect that the fire originated in an area popular with illegal off road bikers.

According to the MEN the police made the initial claim but have since said they are looking into all possibilities, maybe the exhaust of the bikes was the cause of the ignition along with the very dry conditions on the moor.

Natural event fire .

Why are they wasting resources trying to put it out ?
That weed will be back in no time .
Plough up where it comes into human habitation.

The rest leave to nature.

I know this might sound slightly macabre...but learning of the fire I began to wonder if putting it out might lead to discovering the final resting place of young Keith Bennett, one of the victims of Brady and Hindley. I didn't know him, but we were about the same age and lived in the same area, C-on-M. He went missing on the way to his grandmother's house in Longsight, never to be seen again.
I still recall the fuss my mates and I made when our parents started picking us up from school (St Josephs, Plymouth Grove). We couldn't understand what all the fuss was about...but years later, my god, how lucky we're we!

Asthmatics were advised to stay in their homes and people were warned to keep pets indoors as a smoky haze settled above the city.

In a statement issued late on Wednesday night, Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said: “I pay tribute to our Armed Forces’ professionalism, dedication and sense of duty. They are proving once again that Britain can always depend on our troops to protect us no matter the time, no matter the place, and no matter the problem.

Report in this mornings Mail claims that discarded cigarettes from aforementioned bikers are the possible cause, local farmer James Crowther called them "stupid, brainless idiots".

Just attended an incident in saddle worth.
The air is thick with smoke I didn't see any fires but the smell is claustrophobic to say the least.

Lots of fire engines about parked with hoses running over the roads.

If you have any respiration difficulties I warn you to stay well away.

Not even to drive through . The haze in the air makes it look foggy.
