Thomas Phillips's shops, 1916 to 1940 to find
« on: 21:52:55, 03/11/07 »
Help please, where can I obtain the records of my father's shops?
He was a gentleman's hairdresser from 1916 to 1940.
The places are Salford, Stretford and Reddish.
Are records kept somewhere of businesses owned in the last century?
Advice welcomed.
Libby

Hi Libby,

There might be a mention of your father's shops in rate books. These may be held at the Manchester Archives and Local Studies, Central Library, St Peter's Square, Manchester. M2 5PD If they're not there a member of staff should be able to tell you where to find them.

Hello Christopher, thank you for your advice.
I will add that place to my list of places to go to do this research on my dad's shops, for when I visit the areas in question.
This has been the hardest search so far since I started compiling my family tree.
Thanks again, all the best,
Libby

re your family tree I wondered if there was an H. Pilling he owned a small chain of chemist shops in Sale and Northendon (South Manchester) I think he was called Harry and he had a daughter Susan and a son
they lived on Brooklands Road, Brooklands Sale

Hello celeste,
My dad was a gentlemen's hairdresser all his life. He only owned a few shops and not all at once. I am not sure I will ever find them now.
I contacted the Manchester Library and they only found one, and I already know that one.
There is a very interesting reason why I want to find them all, which has nothing to do with genealogy, but just an event in his life, and our family, what remains of it now, would like me to find where his shops were.
All the best, Libby
