Don't bother with Obsidian Restaurant
« on: 20:11:10, 19/02/06 »
Having made a reservation at Obsidian for Sat 18 Feb at 8.30pm many weeks before, requesting a booth for 4 for ourselves and dear friends who were visiting from London (who like us have frequented many Michelin star restaurants in London) as we wanted to show what impressive restaurants Manchester has too!  Never ever will my husband and I set foot in that shoddy place ever again!  Firstly we were offered a table right next to the door, which was only set for two people, not a booth as requested.  We explained we had booked a booth and were told if we went to the bar for a drink they would accommodate us. During all this time the girl on the front desk (who incidentally was dressed like she had just been out with her friends, not professional attire at all) was still carrying our coats about whilst showing us to our table and then straight through the restaurant) Seeing that all the booths were busy we said we would quite happily sit further into the restaurant at a table set for 4 people.  When our waitress arrived to take our drinks order and hand us the menus; firstly we could not understand a word she was saying, but we did just manage to work out her saying there was no beef and no lamb on the menu and that the menu had just changed and was a trial run!!  What restaurant runs out of main stable produce on a Saturday evening at only 8.30pm if at all on such a popular evening?  So a bit disgruntled our order was for 1 chicken and 3 duck...... and yes you have guessed it the waiter came back to announce they had ran out of duck!  As well as our question about the wine list not being answered and the initial waitress ignoring us every time she passed our table, it was the final straw and after asking the waiter how on earth a restaurant could run out of food at 8.30pm and he could not give a definitive answer and his lack of apology for this, we got up to leave.  Can you believe they even had the audacity to produce a bill of £14 for our drinks whilst we were waiting for our coats?  They were told that there was no way it was being paid and walked out.  The previous time our friends came to visit, we too went to Lounge 10 and we had the most superb evening of food, wine, entertainment and company; how we wished we had gone back there

OOOch

Sounds a bit Harsh!

We've been there loads of times and it's possibly the best and most consistent service in a bar/ restaurant in Manchester.

If you go (which you definately should at least try it), you have to try the chateau briand in the restaurant.

Also got to have a few cocktails at the bar- this is where I think they are better than everywhere else in Manchester.  The waiters aren't sleezy, but seem interested in finding a cocktail to suit, so ask you about your likes / dislikes.  We sometimes go in now and they'll remember us and come up with something esspecially for us.

Top class venue in my mind, and I'm fussy at the best of times :-\
