The honour fell to Naomi Osaka to light the flame, the beacon of hope the Olympics attempts to be.


It marked the official opening of Tokyo 2020, a year later than planned, and in the midst of a global pandemic.  Perhaps as expected, Friday's opening ceremony was not of the usual ilk. No carnival like Rio, no skydiving monarchs like London, but a more sombre tone, a sobering reminder that this is a Games taking place in a world still facing its toughest challenge.

"Today is a moment of hope," said Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
"Yes, it is very different from what all of us had imagined. But let us cherish this moment because finally we are all here together."

To be fair the money wasted by both Local and National government this is something I don't mind them spending the money on.  The Athletics stadium over the road is used a lot and having the cycling in the same area works for me. 


What they should do is ensure that they are much better utilised.

The Velodrome has heavy use 7 days a week from 8am until 9pm with different groups. The timetable is on the Velodrome for all to view.

  Didn't know that, I pass it often and the place looks closed, no vehicles in the car park like before they built the other one 'dahn sarf', I just assumed it was the council finding more ways to spaff money up the wall.

Great Britain's Georgia Taylor-Brown produced a superb run to earn an Olympic silver medal in the women's triathlon, then revealed she almost missed the Tokyo Games after a leg injury left her on crutches just 12 weeks ago.

Taylor-Brown, who had to prove she was fit enough to compete a week before flying out to Japan, responded by winning a medal after fighting back from a bike puncture which left her well adrift of the leaders.The 27-year-old was 22 seconds behind a four-woman pack - which included British team-mate Jessica Learmonth - going into the final leg.
But the 2020 world champion moved past Learmonth, who ended up finishing ninth, Germany's Laura Lindemann and American Katie Zaferes to earn a place on the podium.

Taylor-Brown, who had not raced since September, said proving her fitness was "probably more stressful" than Tuesday's race.[
"It could have been taken away from me, but I proved that I was fit, I was ready to go, I did more than they asked me to do," she said.

Swimmer Tom Dean sensationally clinched Team GB's fourth gold of the Tokyo Olympics on day four of the Games as Great Britain secured its best ever start to a Games.
GB claimed six medals on Tuesday, including two silvers and three bronzes, to take their tally to 13 overall and put them fifth in the medal table.It more than doubles Britain's previous best medal haul of six after the first four days, achieved at the 2000, 2008 and 2016 Games.
Dean, 21, who contracted Covid for the second time six months ago, edged out compatriot Duncan Scott into second by 0.04secs in the 200m freestyle swimming.

And Georgia Taylor-Brown fought back from a puncture on the last lap of the bike leg to take triathlon silver.
There was also a first medal in 93 years for GB's women's gymnastics team, who took bronze, as did Bianca Walkden in the taekwondo +67kg, matching her result at Rio 2016.
And Charlotte Dujardin pulled level with rower Dame Katherine Grainger as Britain's most decorated female Olympian, claiming her fifth career medal as Britain's dressage team won bronze.
She can become the first British woman to win gold at three consecutive Games should she retain her individual title on Wednesday.

Bethany Shriever claimed a thrilling BMX gold and Duncan Scott extended his streak in the pool as Great Britain won six Olympic medals on Friday with potentially more to come.

A silver for Kye Whyte in the BMX men's race was Britain's first in the event at an Olympic Games, and a first gold quickly followed through Shriever in the women's race.Scott claimed his third medal in Tokyo with silver in the men's 200m individual medley, while Luke Greenbank took 200m backstroke bronze.

The men's eight won a rowing bronze and Bryony Page added another in the women's trampolining on day seven.
GB finished the Games with two rowing medals, their lowest rowing medal tally at an Olympics since they won two at Atlanta 1996 and the first time they have not won at least one gold since 1980.

Friday brought the start of the athletics in Tokyo, with Dina Asher-Smith qualifying second in her opening 100m heat
