A developer says it will appeal against the rejection of multimillion-pound plans to bring one of golf's most prestigious events to Bolton.

Peel L&P said it wanted to "create an iconic sporting venue" at Hulton Park and hoped to secure the 2031 Ryder Cup.

The plan - also including homes, a golfing academy, allotments and village hall - was rejected by councillors[/size] due to the impact on greenbelt land.

Peel said it was "an ambitious scheme" but one "Bolton deserves and needs".

A spokeswoman said the company was still committed to investing £240m in Bolton "and help put the town on a global stage".

England is hoping to hold the biennial competition between the US and Europe's best golfers, with the Bolton site among the possible venues.

Apparently the developers think they know more than the councillors!

Those of us who fondly remember ‘Viz’ comic (before it self-destructed and went Woke) will recall Mr Hugo Guthrie, who was Head of Leisure and Tourism at Tipton Borough Council for a great many years.

Has Mr Guthrie taken up his latest position with Bolton Metropolitan Freeloaders, or whatever the council call themselves these days, one wonders?

In the event of another doomed FA bid for a World Cup here in England, I would like to pitch a stake here and now for the use of Penlee Park (home of Penzance AFC) during the group stages of the tournament. Obviously, it wouldn’t be suitable for the later stages; that would simply be silly……….
