A 3.8 magnitude earthquake has been recorded in Shropshire.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said the tremor happened at a depth of 8km (5 miles), near Wem in the north of the county.

Residents of nearby towns and villages including Shrewsbury, Telford, and High Ercall, contacted the BBC with reports of their homes sh
One resident said her legs "turned to jelly" as she felt her bedroom floor shuddering beneath her.

Fire crews in Market Drayton said they also felt the tremor and urged people not to call emergency services unless someone was in danger.

I remember, during my student days in Bangor, sitting in the King’s Arms in the main shopping street when one of these earth tremors struck. We were all shaken quite vigorously for several seconds, and we joked about how strong the Burtonwood Bitter must have been that day. These things happen, but we must be thankful that we only get tremors over here in the UK rather than proper job full-blown quakes.

Was it a tremor which caused the landslide in Aberfan?

The Aberfan disaster was the catastrophic collapse of a colliery spoil tip on 21 October 1966. The tip had been created on a mountain slope above the Welsh village of Aberfan, near Merthyr Tydfil, and overlaid a natural spring. A period of heavy rain led to a build-up of water within the tip which caused it to suddenly slide downhill as a slurry, killing 116 children and 28 adults as it engulfed Pantglas Junior School and a row of houses.

We must all be thankful we were not caught up in that horrible disaster. I recall reading online recollections from survivors on the fiftieth anniversary in 2016. The town has never recovered from that awful day, and it quite possibly never will.
