Firefighters have hit out at teenagers who shone lasers pens in their eyes and threw fireworks at them as they tackled a spate of blazes in Cheshire.

Crews in Winsford were met by youths shining the lasers and hurling projectiles, Cheshire Fire said.

Sixteen fires are believed to have been set deliberately since the weekend in the area, manager Steve McCormick said.

One was near a care home and "could have caused serious injury or death" had it spread, he added.

The fire service said the situation began on Saturday and had "got so bad" that by Sunday, police escorts were needed to accompany fire engines to incidents.

Mr McCormick said the assaults could have injured them and damaged fire engines, leaving them "unavailable to respond to genuine emergencies, leaving the community at risk".

He said the service was working with police to prosecute anyone suspected of arson.

Inspector Jason Murray, of Cheshire Police, appealed for information to find those responsible.

He said: "These incidents could have had devastating consequences on innocent members of the public and I want to reassure residents that we have a zero-tolerance approach to this careless crime."

Fireworks were thrown at emergency services dealing with callouts on Bonfire Night across England.

A police officer was hurt and vehicles were damaged in Liverpool on one of the busiest nights of the year for 999 crews.

Eight people were detained by police, with three remaining in custody for questioning.

In Leeds, riot officers were called in to deal with disorder when fireworks were thrown into crowds.

Four people were arrested in Bradford in connection with attacks on emergency service workers.

West Yorkshire Police said police and fire service vehicles were attacked in the Bradford Moor area.

Four young people were arrested in connection with the incidents, the force said. The four were later released on bail.

Insp Paul Riley said: "Assaults on emergency workers are totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

"We will work with partners to take positive action on these types of incidents."

Crews were also targeted when tackling blazes in Greater Manchester, where they attended 229 incidents overnight.

They said it was a slight rise compared to 218 incidents in the region in 2021.

In north-east England, Cleveland Fire Brigade said [size=inherit]firefighters had fireworks and rocks thrown at them in "several violent incidents".

They have no fear of any consequences, because they know the police are a joke and the courts are even worse. And so they behave precisely as they please, just as we might expect from barbarians and savages.

There are a few ways of dealing with this , one is the police just get stuck into them ,two ,the police nick em pass their details to the benefit agency and the benefit agency then stops their parent/ parents benefit, not perfect but better then what’s happening now which is zilch .
