Hooray! This is the first piece of good news for a very long time. HS2 is a white elephant that should never have seen the light of day. It might have made some kind of sense thirty or forty years ago, but certainly not in this age of web cams and video conferencing.

At least they won't be wasting any more money on this monstrosity or inflicting any further damage upon the countryside in its name. It's just too bad they'll find something else to waste it on.....

tbf he has to consider the cost.

Rishi Sunak refuses to confirm whether the new multi-billion pound high speed rail line will reach Manchester, as is currently planned
  • Sunak is in the city, where the four-day Conservative Party conference begins today
  • Asked "yes or no" whether HS2 will reach Manchester, he says he "won't comment on speculation"
  • The multi-billion pound project - due to link London, Birmingham, and beyond - has been plagued by delays and overspends
  • A final decision may be announced in the government's Autumn Statement - due on 22 November
  • Meanwhile, when pressed on possible tax cuts, Sunak says "the best tax cut that we can give working people is to halve inflation"
