Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel has set a date for its planned offensive in Gaza's city Rafah.

His government has been signalling its intentions to launch a military operation in the southern city, where more than 1.5m Palestinians are sheltering, for several weeks.

Mr Netanyahu said the planned offensive was necessary for "the elimination of terrorist battalions there".

World leaders have urged Israel not to go ahead with the plan for weeks.

In a joint intervention on Tuesday, the leaders of Egypt, France and Jordan warned Israel the offensive would have "dangerous consequences" and "threaten regional escalation".

On Monday, the Israeli leader said a date to begin the Rafah offensive had been agreed internally but provided no further details.

Mr Netanyahu's comments came as talks between Hamas and Israel over a hostage-prisoner swap and ceasefire deal continued in Egypt.

He said: "Today I received a detailed report on the talks in Cairo, we are constantly working to achieve our goals, first and foremost the release of all our hostages and achieving a complete victory over Hamas.

"This victory requires entry into Rafah and the elimination of the terrorist battalions there. It will happen - there is a date."

At the same time, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant suggested that now was the right time for a deal over hostages, six months into the war with Hamas.

A senior Hamas official told the Reuters news agency that Israeli proposals had not met its demands but the group said they would nevertheless be examined.

"There is no change in the position of the occupation [Israel] and therefore, there is nothing new in the Cairo talks," the Hamas official, who asked not to be identified, said. "There is no progress yet."

William Burns, the director of the CIA, is attending the Cairo talks. His presence underlines the growing pressure from the US - Israel's main ally - for an agreement.

The US is opposed to any assault on Rafah, where many Gazans forced to leave their homes in the north have settled.

Palestinians in Gaza are marking Eid-al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan, amid destruction and a looming famine as Israel's offensive against Hamas continues.

The BBC's Gaza correspondent says "this year there is no sweets or joy, only pain", while one family in Rafah say they are marking the day "without the basic necessities of life".
US President Joe Biden says he believes Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is making a "mistake" in his handling of the war in Gaza. In an interview, Biden urged Israel to agree to a six-to-eight week ceasefire in its war against Hamas to allow "total access" of food and medicine into the enclave.

International pressure is growing for a ceasefire to be agreed as talks continue in Cairo. The latest round has included the head of the CIA.
Netanyahu says he has set a date for a military offensive in the southern city of Rafah, where about 1.5 million Palestinians are sheltering.

The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, has reiterated warnings of possible famine, saying far too little aid is reaching Gaza.

Will Netanyahu be seen as a war criminal in history?

On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s commitment to the total destruction of Hamas, and declared that no force on earth will stop that goal. He was addressing new IDF recruits at the the IDF Induction Base at Tel Hashomer.
"This is a very significant day in your lives and in the life of the state. The state exists thanks to our ability to defend ourselves. These attacks have not ceased since we established the state; this has been the fate of the Jewish people for hundreds and even thousands of years. What changed with the establishment of the state is our ability to repel these attacks, sometimes at a very heavy cost, but with a strength that the entire world understands, may not always like, but we know that without it we would not exist."This is what you are doing here today, in the various units, brigades and corps. We are, in effect, defending the existence of our state, which is also the personal existence of each and every one of you, your families, your friends and also the coming generations. This is no exaggeration or lofty words. These are very precise words; this is what will determine if our state exists.
The most prominent thing that we have seen in the six months since the outbreak of the war is the immense increase in the motivation of the young people, the desire to enlist, defend and fight, both young men and young women. We have never seen such a thing. This attests to the power of the life in our people. I think that you deserve all praise as well as the understanding that you are – in effect – doing something of historic significance.”
Prime Minister Netanyahu added, about the fighting in the Gaza Strip [translated from Hebrew]:
“We will complete the elimination of Hamas’s battalions, including in Rafah. No force in the world will stop us. There are many forces trying to do this but it will not help because this enemy, after what it has done, will not do this again. Neither will it exist. We are committed to doing this, and each one of you now, at this base, will contribute in one way or another to completing the goal. This must be. After doing such a thing to our country – it will not be done any more.
We have three objectives: One – to return our hostages, all of the field observers, and not just them, but everyone together. We will return them all. The second objective: Eliminating Hamas. The third objective: To ensure that Gaza will never again constitute a threat to Israel.
There is a fourth objective: Hamas is part of Iran’s axis of evil, which aims to destroy us. And when we defeat Hamas, it is not only defeating Hamas – it is defeating the axis. Everyone in the Middle East and beyond is sitting in the stands and watching who will win on this field, Israel or Iran and its proxies. You already know who will win. Good luck!”
Also participating in the visit were the Prime Minister’s Chief-of-Staff, the Prime Minister’s Military Secretary, the Head of the IDF Personnel Branch, the commander of the Border Defense School and additional senior IDF officers.Meanwhile, Israel is doing all it can to protect civilian lives in Rafah, contrary to Hamas, which is using civilians as human shields. But the world does not pressure Hamas to surrender; it pressures Israel to abandon its necessary war for the benefit of Hamas.

President Joe Biden has promised Israel "ironclad" US support amid fears that Tehran could launch reprisals for an attack that killed senior Iranians.

Mr Biden warned that Iran is threatening to launch a "significant attack" after Israel struck the Iranian consulate in Syria 10 days ago.

"We're going to do all we can to protect Israel's security," he added.

Earlier on Wednesday, Iran's leader said the Israeli attack in Damascus was equivalent to an attack on Iran itself.

"When they attacked our consulate area, it was like they attacked our territory," Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a televised speech.

"The evil regime must be punished, and it will be punished."

It is not yet clear what form any reprisal attack would take.

For Iran to strike Israel directly would risk an even greater escalation in the conflict, and analysts have said Iran does not have the military capability for a significant confrontation.

A possible alternative is an attack via an Iranian proxy like Hezbollah, which frequently carries out smaller strikes on Israel from neighbouring Lebanon.

On Sunday an Iranian official warned Israel's embassies were "no longer safe", suggesting a consulate building could be a possible target.

Experts have also suggested Iran could target Israel with a cyberattack.

How might Iran seek to hurt Israel after general's killiing.

Thirteen people were killed in the 1 April attack on the Iranian consulate building, including senior Iranian military leaders.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack, but is widely considered to have been behind it.

US and Israeli forces in the region have been put on high alert in the days since.

United States has restricted travel for its employees in Israel amid fears of an attack by Iran.

The US embassy said staff had been told not to travel outside the greater Jerusalem, Tel Aviv or Beersheba areas "out of an abundance of caution".

Iran has vowed to retaliate, blaming Israel for a strike on its consulate in Syria 11 days ago, killing 13 people.

UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron has phoned his Iranian counterpart to urge against further escalation.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the consulate attack but is widely considered to have been behind it.

Iran backs Hamas, the armed Palestinian group fighting Israel in Gaza, as well as various proxy groups throughout the region, including some - such as Hezbollah in Lebanon - that frequently carry out strikes against the Israelis.

Those killed in the consulate attack included a senior commander of Iran's elite Quds Force in Syria and Lebanon, as well as other military figures.

The attack came at a time of continuing diplomatic efforts to prevent the war in Gaza spreading across the region.

Speaking on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden warned Iran was threatening to launch a "significant attack" and vowed to offer "ironclad" support to Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his government was ready to meet any security challenge, warning that Israel would harm any country that caused it harm.

"We are prepared to meet all of the security needs of the State of Israel, both defensively and offensively," he said.

US President Joe Biden says he expects Iran to attack Israel "sooner than later", as fears grow of Iranian retaliation over an air strike that killed top commanders early this month.

Israel has not admitted attacking an Iranian consulate in Syria but is widely believed to have been behind it.

US officials have told CBS News, the BBC's US partner, that a major attack on Israel could happen imminently.

Israel says it is ready to defend itself. Mr Biden told Iran : "Don't."

"We are devoted to the defence of Israel. We will support Israel," Mr Biden said. "We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed."

Iran backs Hamas, the Palestinian group fighting Israel in Gaza, as well as various proxy groups throughout the region, including some - such as Hezbollah in Lebanon - that frequently carry out strikes against the Israelis.

The world was left in utter shock today as the murderous Iranian regime had the incredible gall to ignore the warnings of a confused old dotard.

Despite President Biden telling the Iranians, "Don't", the Iranians did, much to the surprise of billions around the world. "I really can't believe the regime that openly financed the murder and rape of hundreds of Israelis had the nerve to stand up to a decrepit old fool," said local man Donald Stanley. "Who could have possibly seen this coming?"

According to sources, President Biden was furious that Iran completely ignored him and bombed Israel anyway. "Biden is looking into several options for retaliation, including threatening to put the Ayatollah in time-out," explained Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre, "If it comes to it, Biden is prepared to withhold the Irianian leader's evening treat or even his screen time. We mean business."
At publishing time, the Ayatollah had announced that if Biden didn't keep sending him tens of millions of dollars, he would hold his breath until he passed out.

  • Israel's minister of defence, Yoav Gallant, has said the confrontation with Iran is “not over yet"
  • Iran said the attack "achieved all its objectives" and added it would use greater force if Israel responded in kind

It's time to "step back from the brink", says UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, after Iran's attack on Israel late on Saturday
  • He tells the UN security council that people in the Middle East face the danger of a devastating full-scale conflict
  • His comments come as Israel urged the UN to impose "all possible sanctions" on Iran at the same meeting
  • Tehran launched more than 300 projectiles at Israel, in what it said was retaliation to an earlier strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus
  • UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron says Iran suffered a "double defeat" after its attack failed and it showed its true nature to the world
  • It is unclear how Israel plans to respond, but war cabinet minister Benny Gantz has said it will "exact a price" for Iran's attack when the timing is right

In a swift and decisive response to the drone and missile attack on Israeli targets over the weekend, President Joe Biden retaliated against Iran by attaching a note to the next pallet of cash that reads "PLEASE DO NOT USE FOR TERRORISM."

The note, which was translated into Farsi, was placed in a clearly visible location on the next U.S. shipment of cash being sent to Tehran, with the Biden administration confident that its stern tone would ensure the Iranian regime would know not to use any of the billions of U.S. dollars on terrorism.

"Listen up, folks," Biden said in a brief statement announcing the retaliatory measure. "We're serious. Just as serious as… as serious as… we're just as… we're… well, anyway, in all seriousness. I have personally notified the Iranian government that they are not allowed to use any of this money for terrorism. So, if they're thinking about doing it… I'll just… I'll say… I'm saying… don't."
When reached for comment, a spokesman for the Iranian regime expressed willingness to adhere to the directions of the note. "Ah, yes," the spokesman said as laughter could be heard in the background of the phone call. "The directions are very clear. We will not use any of these billions and billions of dollars to do any of the things we used the last pallet of cash to do. We promise. Thank you, and death to America."

At publishing time, the White House warned Iran that the following shipment of cash pallets would be clearly marked with "PLEASE? PRETTY PLEASE?" notes if they failed to follow the directions of this note.
