When there are mass arrests where do the police put them all,  have they all got criminal records?

I expect the major parties will proclaim that they will provide more police and give more funding.

It was a pyrrhic victory. It only occurred because the snarling Nazi….whoops, I’m sorry, I mean the police officer…..who hauled him in put the wrong date on some form or other. He explained this away by claiming that his laptop was not fully charged rather than owning up to being as thick as pigs hit.

And they will be back to arrest him again very soon, no doubt charging him with Suspected Integrity or something equally terrible.

The UN's human rights chief has said he is "horrified" by the destruction of Gaza's Nasser and al-Shifa hospitals and the reports of "mass graves" being found at the sites after Israeli raids.

Volker Türk called for independent investigations into the deaths.

Palestinian officials said they had exhumed 283 bodies at Nasser, some with their hands tied. It is not clear how they died or when they were buried.

Israel's military said claims that it buried bodies there were "baseless".

But it did say that during a two-week operation at the hospital in the city of Khan Younis in February, troops "examined" bodies buried by Palestinians "in places where intelligence indicated the possible presence of hostages".

Ten hostages who have now been released have said that they were held at Nasser hospital for long periods during their captivity.

Prior to the Israeli operation at Nasser, staff there had said they were being forced to bury bodies in the hospital's courtyard because nearby fighting prevented access to cemeteries. There were similar reports from al-Shifa before the first Israeli raid on the hospital took place in November.

The Israeli military has said it has raided a number of hospitals in Gaza during the war because Hamas fighters have been operating inside them - a claim Hamas and medical officials have denied.

Why would the idf search hospitals if they didn’t have concrete proof that hamas  are using them ,they would have better things to target ,

Hersh Goldberg-Polin: Gaza hostage's parents urge him to 'stay strong' after new video.

Watch: Parents of American-Israeli hostage in Gaza react to video released by Hamas.

    By David Gritten
    BBC News

The parents of an Israeli-American hostage in Gaza have urged him to "stay strong" and "survive" after Hamas released a proof-of-life video.

Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23, is seen without his lower left arm in the short clip. It was blown off during Hamas's 7 October attack on southern Israel.

The footage is undated, but he says he has been held for almost 200 days.

In response, his mother and father appealed for more to be done to secure a new hostage release deal.

They urged Israel, Hamas and mediators the US, Egypt and Qatar to "get a deal done" to reunite "all of us with our loved ones and end the suffering in this region".

Speaking under duress in the video posted on Hamas's Telegram account on Wednesday, Mr Goldberg-Polin said he needed medical help and was critical of the Israeli government's attempts to negotiate the hostages' return.

Weeks of indirect negotiations have failed to produce an agreement, with Hamas rejecting the latest proposal for a six-week ceasefire in exchange for the release of 40 of the remaining 133 hostages. At least 30 hostages are presumed dead.

Israel appears to be moving ahead with plans for an offensive in Rafah, southern Gaza, despite warnings of the potentially catastrophic humanitarian consequences for the 1.5 million displaced Palestinians sheltering there.

Fatah: Hamas kills aid workers and steals food for itself

Ephraim D. Tepler and Itamar Marcus  | Apr 21, 2024
  • Fatah TV anchor: Hamas attacked and killed aid workers; it has persecuted them since the start of the war
  • In an incredible and rare admission, Fatah has corroborated what Israel has been saying all along: that Hamas is responsible for turmoil connected to distribution of the humanitarian aid sent into Gaza. A Fatah TV anchor reported that throughout the war, Hamas has been committing what is essentially a triple crime—it has attacked and killed aid workers in order to control aid distribution, stolen the food and water for itself, and caused food prices to skyrocket.
    Click to play height=360
Fatah-run Awdah TV host: “Hamas’ persecution of any party who is a source for distributing the [humanitarian] aid or securing it began from the start of the war (i.e., 2023 Gaza war), as Hamas persecuted well-known figures and teams of volunteers on the ground in mid-October [2023]. It attacked them and killed some of them for two reasons: Firstly, preventing any activity by any [other] party in the Gaza Strip; and secondly, ensuring Hamas control over the aid and its storage, which of course leads to these crazy and unreal prices that no one can pay in the shadow of this destruction. After the occupation (i.e., Israel) bombed storehouses controlled by Hamas, the accumulation of tons of various food and aid products that Hamas had taken exclusivity over became clear, at a time when the Gaza Strip is suffering from hunger.”
Part of an interview on Al-Jazeera TV from the Gaza Strip is shown:
Woman from the Gaza Strip: “The aid isn’t reaching all the people.”
Al-Jazeera TV reporter: “Few things are arriving and they [Hamas] claim they are distributing them.”
Woman: “It is all to their [own] homes. Let Hamas catch me and shoot me and do what they want to me.”
[Fatah Commission of Information and Culture, Facebook page, April 1, 2024]
</blockquote>This is a damning indictment by Fatah, exposing Hamas' heinous actions against humanitarian aid workers and Palestinian civilians in need of food. World powers were quick to decry Israel for an inadvertent tragedy that killed several World Central Kitchen personnel. These same authorities and media outlets must now condemn Hamas with equal vigor for its intentional murder of aid workers. A failure to condemn Hamas for intentional murder by the countries and frameworks who condemned Israel for accidental killing would expose once again a glaring double standard by international bodies, and especially the media, that unfortunately has accompanied this entire war.

The leader of the US House of Representatives was heckled in a tense visit to Columbia University as protests against the war in Gaza continue to spread across US campuses.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said Columbia officials had lost control of the situation.

He called on university president Minouche Shafik to step down.

In Texas and California, police confronted campus protesters and made dozens of arrests.

At Columbia, pro-Palestinian demonstrators also called for Ms Shafik's resignation over police action there against the protests.

Mr Johnson held a news conference at Columbia along with other Republican lawmakers on Wednesday afternoon after briefly meeting Ms Shafik.

The House Speaker dismissed suggestions that the protests were legally protected free speech. He said that Columbia had not acted to restore order on campus and had failed to protect Jewish students amid concerns about antisemitism on and around campus.

"This is dangerous," Mr Johnson said. "We respect free speech, we respect diversity of ideas, but there is a way to do that in a lawful manner and that's not what this is."

    Ashley Judd

Hollywood actress Ashley Judd says the overturning of disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein's 2020 rape conviction is a "hard day for survivors".

"But we live in our truth," Ms Judd told BBC News in an interview.

The case against Weinstein was a landmark moment in the #MeToo movement.

The New York Court of Appeals ordered a new trial, saying the original had been prejudiced by witnesses with claims unrelated to the charges at hand. Weinstein has maintained his innocence.

The 72-year-old remains in prison. He was separately convicted of rape in Los Angeles.

The overturning of the New York conviction was criticised by complainants, lawyers and #MeToo activists as a setback for abuse survivors.

Ms Judd, the first actress to come forward with claims against Weinstein, said her day had been disrupted upon hearing that a new trial had been ordered.

The actress - who starred in films including Ruby in Paradise, Heat, and Norma Jean & Marilyn, and is part of the Silence Breakers group - added that the court's decision was a betrayal for sexual assault survivors.

"Oftentimes survivors say that the betrayal and the moral injury we suffer within the system is worse than the sexual body invasion we experienced in the first place," Ms Judd said.

She also commended those who had come forward in the New York case against Weinstein.

"We know what happened and the truth is consistent," she said.

The New York Appeals Court reached a four-three ruling, stating that Weinstein's 2020 trial had "erroneously admitted testimony of uncharged, alleged prior sexual acts against persons other than the complainants of the underlying crimes".

It also said the trial judge had allowed Weinstein to be cross-examined in a way that portrayed him in a "highly prejudicial" light. "The remedy for these egregious errors is a new trial," it added.

At his trial in 2020, Weinstein was convicted of sexually assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haleyi in 2006 and raping Jessica Mann, a former aspiring actress, in 2013. He was jailed for 23 years.

Weinstein's defence team said sex between the movie executive and the accusers had been consensual.

Foreign states are targeting British universities in order to undermine national security, MI5 has warned.

Vice-chancellors from 24 leading universities were briefed on the threat by the security services and the government on Thursday.

They were warned cutting-edge research could be targeted by states to boost their own militaries and economies.

The deputy prime minister has announced a consultation on measures to protect UK universities.

There has been no direct reference to any one state, but Parliament's intelligence and security committee warned last year that China could be gaining undue influence in British academic research.

Leaders from institutions including the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge and Imperial College London were told research in sensitive areas could be targeted by states intent on stealing intellectual property to enhance their own economic and military capabilities.

    Nancy PelosiImage caption,
Nancy Pelosi has been critical of Israel but says what Hamas did in the country also needs to be recognised

    By Laura Kuenssberg
    Presenter, Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg

Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, has urged protesters on college campuses to protest against Hamas' behaviour as well as Israel's conduct of the Gaza war.

Hundreds of people have been arrested on dozens of campuses across the US, where protests and encampments have sprung up in support of Palestinians in Gaza.

Ms Pelosi, who is a close ally of US President Joe Biden, told the BBC there was "complete justification" for speaking out about the growing humanitarian crisis there and the impact on civilians of Israel's bombardment was almost "unforgiveable".

She has also criticised the actions of the Israeli government while arguing it has a right to self-defence, and is no fan of the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

However, she said she wanted the demonstrators to reflect on their tactics and also condemn Hamas's actions on 7 October.

"We would like to see some of that enthusiasm recognise Hamas as a terrorist organisation that did a barbaric thing in Israel," she said.

Ms Pelosi had her speech at the Oxford Union in the UK interrupted by protesters on Thursday night. Demonstrators also dumped manure outside her own home in California.

"I've said to those [protesters]...do you care about what Hamas has done, do you care about what happened in Israel, would you not, if that happened here would we not have a response?"
