The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, was in shrubbery on the perimeter of the golf course where you can get to from the road, we're told.
A Secret Service agent saw the barrel of a rifle sticking out from the bushes, about 300-500 yards away, and fired at the suspect who then took off, authorities said.
It's remarkable that he could have got that close to Donald Trump, within shooting distance, with a high powered weapon.
So there will be big questions for the Secret Service to answer.
I think it's going to come down to a row about resourcing. The Secret Service is likely to say they simply haven't been given enough of a detail around former president Trump to do something like secure a whole golf course.
That's even though they are meant to now have more resources now than when the last assassination attempt took pace in Pennsylvania.

Just one hole ahead of the former president, a Secret Service agent was on patrol and saw something strange in bushes.
"[size=inherit]He was able to spot this rifle barrel sticking out of the fence[/size]," Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw told reporters.
The Secret Service [size=inherit]"engaged that individual"[/size], Bradshaw said, and they fled.
Authorities now believe that individual was[size=inherit] Ryan Wesley Routh[/size].
While authorities said Routh managed to escape in his car, he was apparently spotted by a witness who snapped a photo of the black Nissan he was driving.
An urgent alert was put out for the vehicle and shortly after, [size=inherit]they got a hit,[/size] authorities said.
A car was stopped on a motorway in Martin County, about a 45 minute drive from the golf course, and a [size=inherit]suspected was arrested.[/size]
Sheriff William Snyder said he was calm, and displaying little emotion.

[/size]On the perimeter of Trump's golf course, portable flood lights are shining onto a single row of palm trees which are sealed by police tape.
We can't get close as squad cars block the route, but this is obviously a key area of investigation.
Behind the trees and a tall hedge row is hole six of the course, towards which police say Trump was headed.
They say that’s when the Secret Service advance security sweep spotted a rifle poking from the bushes.
But there's a key bit of detail we still don’t have: Whether or not the gunman fired.
Either at the Secret Service agents or Donald Trump, who police say was 300-500 yards away from the assailant.
They’ve said only that an agent or agents fired at the suspect: “We are not sure right now if the individual was able to take a shot at our agents, but for sure our agents were able to engage with the suspect," said Rafael Barros from the Secret Service Miami Field Office.

Red police tape surrounds the premises, reading CRIME SCENE DO NOT CROSS.
We pull up in a gas station across the road, where we see two other media crews set up, across from the bushes surrounding the golf course’s perimeter.
It's the same shrubs from which Secret Service officers saw a rifle pop out earlier today. But nobody is allowed anywhere near those bushes anymore. The police tape and vehicles block off anyone seeking to get close.[size=inherit]

BBC Verify has found social media profiles matching that name, they indicate he [size=inherit]called for foreign fighters to go to Ukraine[/size] to battle against Russian forces.
Routh, who had no military experience, told the New York Times in 2023 he had [size=inherit]travelled to Ukraine immediately after Russia's invasion in 2022 [/size]to find military recruits among Afghan soldiers who had fled the Taliban.
"Soldiers, please do not call me. We are still trying to get Ukraine to accept Afghan soldiers and hope to have some answers in the coming months... please have patience," he wrote on Facebook in July.
Early reports suggest Routh [size=inherit]had a criminal record [/size]and, according to CBS sources, he was charged and convicted of numerous felony offences - including[size=inherit] carrying a concealed weapon[/size].
Speaking to US media, Mr Routh's son, Oran, described him as a "loving and caring father".

Shortly after the incident, Vice-President [size=inherit]Kamala Harris[/size] said she had been briefed on gunshots being fired near Trump. "I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America." she wrote on X.
Harris's running mate [size=inherit]Tim Walz[/size] echoed her sentiment, saying: "Violence has no place in our country. It’s not who we are as a nation."
Republican vice-presidential candidate [size=inherit]JD Vance[/size] said he spoke to Trump before news of the incident was made public and said the former president was "amazingly, in good spirits".
Republican Senator [size=inherit]Lindsey Graham[/size] similarly said Trump was "in good spirits" and "more resolved than ever to save our country".

[size=inherit]In a telephone interview with the paper, external[/size], Routh said dozens of soldiers had expressed interest. He also said he planned to move them from Pakistan and Iran to Ukraine, in some cases illegally.
“We can probably purchase some passports through Pakistan, since it’s such a corrupt country,” he said.
Routh also told NYT at the time that he was in Washington to meet with the US Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe “for two hours” to help push for more support for Ukraine.
Routh appears to have been engaged in recruitment efforts right up until as recently as July.
One Facebook post from July read in part: “Soldiers, please do not call me. We are still trying to get Ukraine to accept Afghan soldiers and hope to have some answers in the coming months… please have patience.”

Failed Trump assassin Ryan Routh was photographed with Democrat megadonor and far-left celebrity chef José Andrés in a picture that emerged on Monday morning. The image, which features Andrés pointing at Routh with his arm around him, appears to have been taken in Kiev, Ukraine.
Andrés – himself a frequent Trump critic – owns several high-profile restaurants in Washington, D.C., and beyond. He was singled out for commendation by top Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi, earlier this year. He is a frequent financial contributor to Democratic politicians, including Pelosi, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and others.
Andrés is also the founder of the World Kitchen charity, which has supplied aid to Palestinians in Gaza. When World Kitchen aid workers were killed in an airstrike this year, Andrés organized a memorial service at Washington’s National Cathedral, which featured readings of an Islamic Hadith and excerpts of the Quran.
The chef and restauranteur also serves on the board of GOOD Meat, a company pioneering artificial meat production. Subsequently, Andrés has lobbied the U.S. Department of Agriculture for final approval of GOOD Meat’s products, which will be featured at one of his Washington, D.C.-based restaurants.
Hostility between Trump and Andrés stems from a contract dispute from nearly a decade ago. The restauranteur pulled out of a deal to operate a restaurant in the then-Trump Hotel in Washington, D.C., following Trump’s criticism of illegal immigration from Mexico. A lawsuit brought by the Trump Organization against Andrés was eventually settled on mutual terms in 2017. After Trump sold the hotel for a large profit, Andrés opened a location of ‘The Bazaar’ inside. The hotel is now failing.

The gunman hid for nearly 12 hours in bushes before Donald Trump played an unscheduled game of golf at his oceanfront club in Florida – leaving locals stunned at what authorities say appears to be the second attempt to assassinate the former president in as many months.
It was hot and cloudy on Sunday afternoon when Trump and his good friend, real estate developer Steve Witkoff, arrived on the course of Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.

The former president was on the fifth fairway at 13:31 EDT (17:31 GMT), an area adjacent to busy roads near Palm Beach International Airport, when a member of his protection detail spotted a rifle poking out of foliage by the sixth hole.
Trump - who was evacuated unharmed - recounted on Monday night that he heard “probably four or five” shots ring out in the near-distance.
