The final report on the Grenfell disaster will be published this morning, six years after the inquiry began hearing evidence about what led to the deaths of 72 people in a fire in 2017
  • The report is due to be released at 11:00 BST and will be followed by a public statement by inquiry chair Sir Martin Moore-Bick
  • The findings are expected to criticise successive governments, the building industry, manufacturers, and the London Fire Brigade
  • Survivors of the blaze say they hope to get answers but they say they also want justice
  • This page will contain some distressing details.

Summer 2024 was the Earth's warmest on record, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service. It was also the warmest across Europe at 1.54C above the 1991-2020 long term average, exceeding the previous record from 2022.

August was also the 13th month in a 14-month period where the global average temperature exceeded 1.5C above pre-industrial level.
Despite the UK having its coolest summer since 2015, much of Europe experienced a hotter than average summer.

Sir Keir Starmer will become the first British prime minister to visit the Republic of Ireland in five years on Saturday.
Downing Street says it marks a "new era of co-operation and friendship" between Britain and Ireland.
The prime minister will meet Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Simon Harris, who was elected in April just three months before his British counterpart - both are new to their roles.

Their full day of engagements in the Irish capital will be topped off with the Republic of Ireland v England soccer game at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
"Our relationship has never reached its full potential." he said.

There's loads of demonstrations going on in the Republic of Ireland over the invasion of fighting age males from God knows where, the people aren't happy with their government also.

Will the tool makers son insult the Irish people, as he did in the North, and call them Nazis as well?

The prime minister has told the BBC that his new government is "going to have to be unpopular" and make tough decisions in order to bring reforms.
Speaking on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg in his first major interview in office, Keir Starmer said the only way to change the country was to do "difficult things now" even though "I know they are unpopular".

Defending his decision to [size=inherit]remove winter fuel payments from most pensioners, he said previous governments had "run away from difficult decisions" and Labour could only keep its promises if he acted in his first few months in office.
No10faces a potential rebellionin   this week when there will be a vote on the decision to axe the payment for all but the poorest pensioners.

    Starmer's 'blame the Tories.

Someone rang into 5Live to say a 3% rise in income tax on the highest earners would get rid of the deficit.  Another 1% would enable the winter fuel allowance to be given to all pensioners.

Strange ,that there is a Martin Lewis story saying pensioners born pre 44 still get the £300.after 1944 get 200 . Later as 58/60 are the ones to be affected.

    1,700 prisoners being released today.

A bit more now from the business secretary's interview with BBC Breakfast - during which he says "the spare capacity in the prison system was less than 1%" which is why the government had to act.
He adds that the swift response to the recent UK riots "was only possible because capacity had been created in the system" - and insists those being released early as a result will have their supervision "tightened up".

"But I say openly, I acknowledge, this is the type of difficult decision which as a new government you really wouldn't want to have to make," Reynolds says. "We've got to fix the most basic things when it comes to public services in this country."
This is an "emergency response," he goes on, adding "this is not how the system should run".

Yes,  I said not long ago more prisons are needed,  many of the prisoners being released may not have anywhere to go and could end up back in prisons.
