Gough family in Manchester
« on: 00:28:11, 17/01/08 »
Good evening. I live across the pond and have tried to find various searchable databases  that will give me data on my family ancestors Henry Gough and Mary Godwin (m. Manchester Cathedral 1816). Henry was born likely in Lancashire about 1790. I have searched all of the common sites (Genuki, IGI, FamilySearch, Ancestry.com, British census, etc.) but most seem to have birth records that thin out before 1800. Can anyone tell me if I have missed a site out there that might provide good detailed birth records of Lancashire before 1800? Perhaps they don't exist? Thanks very much for your time. I do appreciate the effort.

This site hold searchable parish records for Lancashire, so might be worth you trying this one.  As the recording of B.M.D.'s did not start till 1837 the only way to find earlier records is from there parish church. Manchester library hold the cathedral records but are not searchable on-line.
good luck.
Migky ;)

Thanks again for your help;, Migky. I have searched the site you suggested but came up empty-handed. Since all of my other family members seem to have been christened or married in Manchester Cathedral I started there first. Also searched Blackley, Prestwich, Oldham but either the various parishes do not list my ancester at all OR they do not have searchable records for the late 1700s. Will continue to try. Thanks again for your help.

Migky: Thanks for your further help. I seem to have been "stuck" for about 20 years finding more information on ancestor Henry Gough and wife Mary Godwin. I have a copy of their  marriage certificate but it lists no names of parents or where they were born. A family headed by a Henry and Mary Gough lived in Prestwich in 1841, along with many family members. However, I cannot connect that Henry and Mary to mine, nor can I connect Henry and Mary's son  and my direct ancestor (Joseph), from whom I am descended, to that family, as he was married and living in Manchester at the time of the census. As the '41 census gives the age of the Prestwich Henry and Mary as "50", they would have been born about 1791, precisely the right age for my relatives, who were married in 1816. The only other Henry Gough and Mary (Spencer) marriage in Manchester Cathedral (as listed in the IGI, which we all know is incomplete anyway) took place in 1806, which would mean that that couple would not have been 50 in 1841 (unless they were married at age 15). So, by default and by circumstantial evidence, the 1841 Prestwich Goughs very well COULD have been mine. If I could only find the maiden name of the Prestwich Mary to confirm or dispell this assumption once and for all. OR, bypassing that issue, if I could only find when and where my Henry was born and who his father was. Ditto for my Mary.
I know this is a very long reply and it at least allows me to vent frustration. Anyway, thanks for your help and concern. I will let you know what I find out.

Not forgetting Sandra Gough who played Irma Ogden in Coronation Street, and Zac Dingle's first wife in Emmerdale, a real Lancashire lass. O0

Certainly not, nor Michael Gough of the old Batman TV series here in the states. Thanks Celeste. I am still searching but running out of steam real fast. Seems I have looked under every stone for my family but continue to come up empty-handed. :-\

Yes, they have both tried, but to no avail. It seems Henry was married 1 Jan 1816 in Manchester Cathedral to Mary Godwin, and that is all I can find on either of them. They did have at least one child, Joseph, who worked in Manchester in 1841in the textile industry and who emigrated to the states in 1843 with wife Mary Ogden and son Joseph, beginning my line here. So you see, without birthdates, death dates, or parents' names I am pretty much gibbetted and hung out to dry. Thanks for your interest.

I suggest you join Manchester & Lancashire Family History Society where there are lots of helpful people all researching their family trees and willing to offer help and advice to others researching their family roots.  Have a look at their website.
