very interesting Arthur, hope you made your feelings know re the Art Gallery (or minus Art Gallery) sometimes they have a book where people can write their opinions down - not been to Ashton since last year and didn't really explore outside the main shopping centre due to time restrictions  - is Phillips Park still there?

Philip's park is further up the canal, towards Manchester, betwen Bradford and Clayton - a very lovely park, well worth visiting. In the great flood of the 19th century, coffins from the park cemetary floated of down the stret - the incident changedthe rules against shallow burial - that's why coffins now have to go atleast six feet under.

Did express my unhappiness to a gallery curator, but didn't write my thoughts in the visitor's book - should have done though.

Oh I didn't know anything about a great flood, is there anything I can google?

I thought Phillips Park was a nightclub as well?

13 July 1872  There is a monument to the flood in Peel Park in Salford - http://books.google.com/books?id=ush5WC9BM_gC&pg=PA40&lpg=PA40&dq=manchester+flood+peel+park&source=web&ots=GHCsF9Xwmb&sig=CiZ89umTNnXjzHAiMQGXrcosGh8#PPA41,M1
the site also mentions the flood effects on the Medlock at Philip's Park
