How did our ancestors meet? Where did they meet? These are common questions which are asked when searching for ancestors. Are there any ways of answering such questions and where should we start to look to find the answers? The sources for these answers are the same ones that are used when we attempt to find where our ancestors lived.

1. Business records ... Don't forget the guys who married the boss's daughter

2. Church histories ... some ministers married their predecessor's daughter

3. Church records ... people meet through the attending the same church. Don't forget to look for old copies of church magazines.

4. Estate records ... Ggg gran may have worked in the big house and ggg grand dad worked on the estate as a labourer or as an estate manager. Look for records of neighbouring estates too.

5. Hospital records ... was one of your ancestors a nurse and the other a patient in the hospital where she worked?

6. Old newspapers.

7. School records ... many long lasting friendships started at school.

8. Staff records ... many couples met in their place of work.

As far as I'm aware the ballrooms of romance didn't keep any records but the archives of the BBC and newspapers sometimes contain interviews with elderly couples who admit to meeting at a dance or at their place of work.

I had to laugh when I read this posting.  It is something I have been wondering while researching my family tree.

How did my g grandmother who lived in Barton-in-Irwell, Stretford meet my
g grandfather who was a Canadian sailor, and as far as I can find out only sailed into Liverpool.   It was pre Manchester Ship Canal days so this is a mystery I will probably never solve.

 :D

Hello pinksox,

If your g grandfather wasn't involved with the unloading and reloading of the ship maybe he had a few days leave due to him so that he could have a look round Lancashire 8)

Hi Christopher

My g grandfather was a Ships Carpenter, sailing too and fro from Nova Scotia to Liverpool in the 1880's.  It is a mystery that I will tackle when I complete the 'more facinating' side, the Canadians and the Mayflower families I have discovered.

Pat ;)
