Princess Street old photos or postcards
« on: 21:57:46, 24/03/08 »
In Slater's 1903 Directory of Manchester William Robsinson is recorded as a clogger who made clogs for factory workers.  He is living at 155 Princess Street but is also recorded as a Stationer & Tobacconist at 159 Princess Street.  Does anyone know of any old photos or postcards of Princess Street that might show his shops?  Does anyone know if the shops in Princess Street have been knocked down and replaced with high rise buildings?  There used to be a pub The Lass O'Gowrie at the corner of Charles Street which was visible from 155 Princess Street.  Is that still standing?  Are there any photos of it?  Apart from the Library Collection are there any other online photo collections of that part of the city in the early 1900s?
Hope someone can help.  You never know unless you ask!!
Jim

Hello Jim,

Postcards of the Past have a great collection of views of Manchester.

They may have a few pictures that are not yet online.

Hello Christopher
Thanks for the link to those wonderful old postcards of Manchester.  What a busy place it was.  The pcs certainly give you the 'feel' of the city 100 years or so ago and in my opinion they're much better than the online library ones.  I'll have a look at a map and see how close the scenes might be to Princess Street.
Thanks again I enjoyed the show.
Jim
